Well i would like to help this community so here it goes :
I bet many of you worry about downloading or getting files online as you may be thinking their unsafe! Well have i got something good to share called www.virustotal.com if you ever download a file scan it on that website and its almsot a guarntee it will detect any harmful things such as viruses , trojans , spyware etc!

information worth knowing :

You can only ever get a virus, trojan or whatever if you run the .EXE for thoses who dont know what that means right click a file such as "msn" click propeties if you look next to 'target' you will noticed something like ""C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe"" see the .EXE this shows us that its whats going to run (and if their is a trojan inside that will also run) i hope your all with me at this point! their are many diffrent types of files such as .bat .EXE << their the ones which will have the trojan inside (not everything that has .exe or .bat will contain something harmful but thats what needs to be run to activate the trjoan virus whatever) so if your unsure about ANY file like i say SCAN at www.virustotal.com

files known as .rar or .zip
Their are files such as .RAR and .zip people can use these to compact many diffrent things such as "msn and a readme.txt which can give information on how to use it" .rar and .zip CONTAIN the .exe but its SAFE to run .rar or .zip files they are 100% SAFE to run...its files inside them that are .EXE that CAN be dangerous!! so if you download any .rar or .zip files and your unsure yet again SCAN at www.virustotal.com

What keyloggers do :
ok this is simple a keylogger runs on your computer (hidden from everywhere) and what ever you type the person who sent it you can see...these days their more advanced and they can do more but that doesnt matter.

What trojans do :
Ok trojans are very nasty things you don't ever want one of these they can be used to re-format your WHOLE pc so everything is lost, mess around like open your cd rom , make keyboar dlights flash (thats for the ahckers fun) they can also keylogg what you type, shutdown your pc , see every programme open, see what website your on + last 100 visisted whatever they desire, mess around in your registry etc!

What viruses + worms do :
Viruses are made for mayhem and distruction as are worms, they just spread through your whole pc and basically trash it so its WORTHLESS! but obviously you can re-format your pc or get exepert help and advise!

All this can eb avoided by having pc protection, preferablly a firewall (deafult one usually comes with pc althought its not very good) also scan your files at www.virustotal.com :) follow this and your ALOT less likly to get any harmful things!

I hope i have helped alot of you people - thats why i wrote this whole thing by hand just because i feel like making a big contribution!!

Hints and tips to know
- regually update your internet security and anti-viruses new viruses are made each day so keep your anti-virus and security up to date :)
- Run a WHOLE computer scan ATLEAST once a week :)
- Scan everything you download at www.virustotal.com :P cant stress it enough (it sometimes may say "suspicous file" but their not always bad)
- Get process guard its a very handy programme info + download here : www.diamondcs.com.au/processguard (hopes thats right link cant check running some stuff :P)
- Most free anti-viruses and scans online will give you viruses trustable ones that are good are : AVG free :) its awesome! considering its free

P.S im 15 which is really cool because next year im going to make about $800 so thats like £600-700 and im being serious :)! (thats minimum i could make more) if any of you are intrested in the money part i could use your help so if you have c++ coding knownledge you could help ALOT! (im making all the money 100% legit)

Ok time to add more! :
Their are now trojanss files (and have been for a long time xD) that can change the way the look e.g change icon...so it can look like a .rar when really its a .exe so if you really want to be secure like i say "right click" > "propties" > look next to target and see if it says ".exe" =)

People who read this may not be botherd to but as i go along when i have time i will add more info hints and tips etc :D thats how nice i am xD i think this would be worth stickying or is that dumb idea? eveventually i will get round to editing the whole thing with images..easier to follow easier to understand etc atm im doing it so you guys get a rough idea =).

If you're still using Internet Explorer;

*** STOP!!!! ***

IE is the one browser that most of the hackers attack and exploit and do nasty things with, cos it's so popular.
Change to something like Firefox (http://www.getfirefox.com/) or Opera (http://www.opera.com/)

i agree with wookie..

for the record, i am not one of these bill gates hating open source geeks, who wastes their life desperately trying to avoid microsoft products and whose idea of a fun time is recompiling their linux kernel.. i love microsoft; their shit works and gates is a top notch business man..

however.. IE7 is a complete mess, imo.. it is a pain to use, counter-intuitive for the user, and as wookie says is vunerable to exploits simply by virtue of the fact it has the largest user base..

i would strongly recommend people download and try out Firefox.. it does everything IE7 does and more, looks nice, and is easy to use with everything where you would expect it to be (what the hell happened to IE's interface in v7?? all the buttons disappeared and it's a nightmare to do the simplest task).. i started using it about a year ago and never looked back..

i use opera anyways :) i would like to make this a wonderful helpfull guide sometime but at the moment i cant be botherd with the work (screenshots, descriptions etc) so if people add more i will compile it into one nice post (new topic) and says who contributed it.
i will download firefox take photo's of the interface , some for opera and then for IE! i hope you guys respect me for what i will do evetually :)

For example :

Wookie contributed
Using bla bla is better because blaa blaa! anyone's whos intrested in cotributing please do so here i will make it into a nice topic (new) or pm me ;)

Wasps - feel my wrath!
Firefox user for some years now only drawback I have seen is sometimes some of the bits of pages wont work or load . This is very rare and must say in general Ff is the dawgs !. Also another suggeestion try Thunderbird email as well . It can even import all your current emails and lots more things besidees besides .I love the whole open source philosophy believing that this "ownership" thing is a bit rich and makes people rich too . Yes I was from first using and knowing about "mosaic" then and am now still one of those old timers who think the internet should be free . On the other hand would I object if someone bunged me huge barrowloads of money to write stuff?.. Nope I would probs be as greedy as the next guy . What is great about open source stuff is that it enables constant change and development which gets tested and used by the people . A sort of a "by the people for the people" belief. Above all it encourages t'yoof to take risks and experiment which all in all can't be a bad thing . If you dont believe what people say about the IE7 browser then change to firefox simply to see what its like it will do no harm to your machine and you might just like it .

no idea, i'm afraid.. i use Firefox for everything, and the Forum works fine..

what do you mean it won't let you log in? as in, you enter your username & password, it takes you to the "Logging in - redirecting" screen, then takes you back to the main page still logged-out? or does something more crazy happen?

go to your Tools menu, select Options at the bottom.. check in the Privacy tab and make sure "Accept cookies from sites" is ticked, and that the forum isn't listed in the Exceptions..

that's about all i can think of :?:

Yeah that's exactly what happens. "Accept cookies from sites" is ticked, and there's nowt in the exceptions section. Baffling.

For the record, I use Firefox and use it for previewing the site when developing, and have never experienced any problems.. In fact, when I used IE7 at a friend's house recently, i noticed a few things that were "broken" (user online status not appearing in thread view, for instance) so if anything the Forum should work better in Firefox!

Sorry I can't make any useful suggestions, Andreas :/

Always good to broaden one's horizons :)

There are some lovely themes which are a vast improvement over the original.. My personal favourite of the moment is iFox Smooth..

Yes, thanks for your contributions Jellyfish :)

I wouldn't worry about spending too much time on it, though.. Most users will not need to interrogate file extensions, etc., and there are plenty of programs out there designed to protect the less computer-savvy user.. Perhaps it would be more useful if you could do a post pointing people in the direction of them, with a brief explanation of each one's Pros and Cons? I'm thinking along the lines of Ad-Aware, AVG, NOD32, Firefox extensions such as NoScript, etc. :)
