Noticed the other day while walking past that there are fossilised ammonites in the stone - one was the size of a dinner plate. Quite groovy i thought.

However, i have been told that the stone came from Germany - not wishing to be all Little Englander about it but are there no quarries in Staffordshire?

Probably but no doubt Staffordshire stone would be more expensive and would have you all outraged with the council wasting money.

Also noticed the other day that yet more scafolding and green netting has gone up, more of the stone cladding seems to have fallen off/been taken down as it is deemed unsafe to leave it up.

Added to that I noticed lots of broken and un-even flag stones, many of which are already chewing gum stained. The benches just seem to have been shoved all over the place now (maybe to make room for the scafolders). Many of the concrete balls are already chipped, lots of the metal work on the building is already rusted and is not straight. There are rubber seals that are presumably supposed to be around the windows that are dangling limply, several of the metal litter bins are already dented, broken revolving doors - the whole thing is starting to look like an absolute mess

Walked past it on Friday night and it is indeed in a parlous state. The stone in the 'sticky outy bits' (technical term) has been removed rather than having fallen off (safety considerations), the revolving doors are bejiggered (sorry again for the technical jargon) and the place looks as much of a building site as when it was, well, a building site.

Much as i don't share the opinions of those that are against it on aesthetic grounds, it has to be said that it is pretty (apologies again for the jargonese) effed up as things stand. Not good.

Not been around for a while.... but has more scaffolding / netting / barriers been put up at the new county council buildings? When is that work going to be finished? Got to be costing someone (contractor or council) a load of money.

And on the subject of delayed construction (sorry to merge another thread) John's chippy - still not open it seems

Could these two unfinished projects be connected...I think we should be told!

It isn't the council's fault that the building is already falling to bits, so of course as part of the contract the contractor will be footing the bill.

Enjoying a drop of red.

One would hope so yes, but common sense and local government rarely go hand in glove. I wouldn't be surprised if a little further down the line it doesn't come out that SCC have 'contributed' towards the repairs...

I took a short cut through Staffordshire place yesterday and ,after tripping over an uneven flag-stone , noticed that quite a few of the slabs were laid unevenly and were chipped already. A couple visiting the area had parked up in the Riverside carpark and were looking for the town centre. As they were approaching Staffordshire Place their comment to each other was "looks a bit derelict around this part, surely this can't be the centre of Stafford!"...................

I think it's looking worse than when I posted early last month.
The other thing that occured to me is that although contractor is footing bill, how much money are SCC losing from not have let the shops that were supposed to be underneath. They must have put in a budget for that revenue and possibly included it in spending plans. With no chance of anyone moving in soon there must be a good few grand lost

I was told that the slabs were "glued on" in the winter and are now coming off. Therefore they all have to come off. You couldn't make it up, could you. Also, I believe that working inside can be a nightmare with half the rooms freezing with people wearing hats and gloves and the other half boiling hot and they want blinds! The County Council must be losing money because the shops cannot be let and the heating isn't working properly.

it's all starting (what am i saying, IS) looking a tad bit embarrassing eh?

Walked through on Monday afternoon, oh boy, the building i think may well have looked great (impo) for approx. 2 days, if that!

Cracked paving slabs are appearing and the scaffolding is an eye-sore for what, say, another 3 or so months, nice.

If they weren't to be chopped down due to root problems or 'disease' the trees (in the courtyard) would out see this building in the years to come, the one thing that will be here in 25 years will be the big balls, that's my prediction ...£balls, well spent!!

I've done a big U-turn on this since the start of the thread, and i hope i do another after the scaffolding has come down and all is well.

I agree about the cracked paving slabs - I was amazed that they are cracking, perhaps because things! fell on them.

...and who'll pay for them?

a) paving slab makers
b) the paving slab layers
c) the people that paid for the paving slabs and the paving slab layers

ummm, i'll go c)!

I so want this building to be good and stay good, for years to come, but if it's at this stage (at this stage) then i hold no hope.

I'm no expert in construction technology but in my personal experience of gravity V glue, gravity generally wins.

They were running public tours of the building some months ago i think. May be should have waited until it was all ok.
Is there an update on when it will all be finished? Do you think contractors will go bust having to spend so much manpower, resources without getting any more money

I doubt they'll go bust but it must be costing them a few quid to put right.... Do construction contractors take out "almighty cock up" insurance to cover themselves?
