Robbie the Robot, how long ago? never seen him
Oh, he'd been around Stafford for years. My Mum worked with him at Stubbs and Meesons when she was just left school. His brother was a well known photographer, Jim Brown. I would even say that Rob was , for quite some time, the most renown of all the characters in Stafford. There was also wanker Dan, Johnny Page amongst others but Rob was the daddy in my eyes. (Please read, the daddy not my daddy).

A old colleague of mine went to work at Weston House Nursing Home by Katharines' House Hospice sometime in the early 00s. I bumped into him and he said that Rob was in there and he'd packed on some timber since he'd been admitted. I didn't believe him until a few years later (probably 2007ish) I saw a chubby Robert Brown being wheeled down the old Sheridan Centre alley by Icelands.

It was definitely him as I got to know Rob fairly well over the years due, in part, to running a shop and working in a couple of others around town during the 80s and 90s, where he'd make himself known during and after he'd gone.

During a drunken evening at The Greyhound pub by the prison, me and a mate of mine thought it was a good idea to go and knock on Rob's door when he lived in Sash street. I never thought it was possible to hold your breath for twenty minutes but also talk at the same time.

When I was about 16 and ridiculously over sensitive, I arrived home from school in tears because, on stopping at the park to feed the ducks as was my habit, I had seen a man who looked just like Jesus but sad and possibly ill. And it was nearly Christmas.

I blame a Catholic education and a lot of reading.

Anyway, in the intervening decades, I have seen this man around Stafford many times. I know nothing about him but I always look carefully, to see if he seems happy.

He still looks like Jesus. He always wears a long coat and I have never seen his feet. Walking behind him, at some distance, is a smaller man I think of as his disciple.

Has anyone else noticed him or am I in fact seeing an apparition?

remarkable that he has been doing this for 25+ years and he is (almost) always reasonably presentable and appears to be quite healthy.

That will be Julian ( the 'disciple' ) and his brother, I'm sure. I'm not sure of the brother's name. They can be seen in the Market now and then. Julian was an internal postman at GEC and someone once described him as 'the most hated man in GEC' - but only because he was so pleasant to everybody, when people didn't want pleasantness foisted upon them.

I saw them about two months ago and had a chat with Julian about the old days - and even got a few words out of the 'Master'..

They are BROTHERS? Gosh, there is very little family resemblance! I am intensely curious about them. Why does Julian have to walk so far behind? Is it just that he can't keep up? Were the words wise? Did they take the form of a parable? Did he seem happy?

My (what must be quite unsettling) observations when I spot them, suggest that Jesus looks more robust these days. But I have never seen him smile. And I don't think he casts a shadow.

There's never been a great resemblance - and Julian is a little chubbier these days. The brother is neither happy nor unhappy, he is probably something-that-we-might-not-understand and is certainly a little less gaunt now. I suspect that Julian is merely in escort mode on the outings and just keeps an eye on things, rather than leading the venture.

Julian enjoys a chat - give it a go next time....

Do they live in Doxey? Is Julian the one with darker and shorter hair? If it is, he has always made an 'out of the way' effort to say hello to me when I've passed him where ever I've been? I did see Julian (if I'm right about his ID) trying to extract money from the phone booths outside the now defunct Moben and Co-Op a year or so back.
