Know who you mean, sometines seems slightly threatening, mostly just odd....Going to add someone to this, every day I see this Asian guy, by Home Bargains/Argos/Peacocks, always laughing to himself, got in my face and gave me a 3 year old style wave, howling to himself today
he is around 5 foot 9, average weight, age around 35
Unfortunately nicknamed 'mong' by the youth so my daughter tells me.Know who you mean, sometines seems slightly threatening, mostly just odd....
I knew him when he used to go in the Bear and Pheasant. The then time gaffer's girl friend used to work in the City publicity office and occasionally get him free tickets for City matches.I really didn't know where to put this, but seeing as I never heard a single bad word said about him -
This evening I heard of the passing of Richard Babb. A chap that many knew, and if you didn't know him you possibly knew him by site.
A huge Man City fan and occasional visitor to Marston Road, a nice guy who fought his own battles in his own way and got on with it. In better weather you'd see him in his Man City shirt, rolling along in his mobility cart.
R.I.P Richard
That's sad news.I really didn't know where to put this, but seeing as I never heard a single bad word said about him -

Was Sammy the Sutton who regularly used the Prince Albert ?Sammy Sutton's son Shane has sadly passed away another local character known to many.
Yes, he did.One of the strongest people you could come across
Never a complaint
Am I right in thinking he once worked at The Universal?
yes got round a few pubs did Sammy ,di some work for my dad at the Hop Pole tooWas Sammy the Sutton who regularly used the Prince Albert ?
Was he disabled from having polio when young ?Rip Richard Babb.
He has been family friend for many years and will be sadly missed.
A lovely guy. He was dealt a terrible hand but never complained.
Was he disabled from having polio when young ?
If so I often saw him about but never knew his name.
Sammy lived up common road before moving to broad eye, he lived there with his wife and son Shane, who unfortunately died a few years agoSammy used to live in one of the houses at Broad Eye next to The Lamb pub with his wife. He used to call everybody, "me babby!" and used to have a gummy smile and a wicked chesty laugh.
He was walking across from Wilkos car park and heading towards the back of the Guildhall Market loading area one early morning when a 'bus knocked him over. He died at hospital.
As for Russian Rob, he actually lived in Sash Street, not County Road. Me and a mate of mine went round there one drunken night and stupidly accepted his invitation in. Even with about 10 pints inside me to dull my senses, 15 minutes is all I could bear before my nose started to melt from the rancid smell.
He was still alive up until two/three years ago. He was at the old folks' home by Katharine House Hospice because a mate of mine used to work there and nursed him.
I actually saw him a year or two prior to that and he was being wheeled around near the Iceland shop by a nurse. He was very clean, smoothly shaven and was actually very chubby!
Ken bayley died years ago, I was related to him(not sure what we were to each other), liked his drink, I never put my hand in my pocket when I bumped in to him, I always ended up drunk!I was talking to a mate the other day and we were discussing some of the characters of the town. So, I thought I would revive this thread and see if any of you folks may know some of interest. Like Ken Bailey, he had a psycho wife Maureen who used to always go looking for him round the pubs and god help you if you got in her way. She died a few years ago now but what happened to Ken? Big Willie is another (I know what you're thinking but I couldn't tell you if it's true) I think it was litteraly because he was a big guy and he had enourmous hands. He used to minesweep in the Chains and nobody would say anything to him because he was so big and you couldn't understand what he was saying when he'd had a few. His wife was tiny and he was terrified of her. Last I heard I think he was working for a company called Cavanagh's but not sure. I don't know if they are a stafford company. Anyway what happened to these folk and does anyone have any other tales to tell.
