Police are only re-active not Active, and speed vans are only there to make money.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
there used to be one of those big LED-on-a-stick things at the bottom of baswich lane that lit up to "warn" you of the speed you were doing.. i dare say they removed it for exactly the same reason that i used to enjoy it being there - i.e. idiots like me seeing how fast you could get it to clock..
Those speed indicators are only there for 3-4 weeks at a time. They are rotated amongst different spots around the town, another being on Porlock Avenue near Leasowes school.

I'm not sure if your "how fast can I go" statement was in jest or not but if it wasn't in jest, stop being an idiot and slow down please.

I am quietly confident that my car has never been over 70mph/120kph (depending on where in these islands I am) with me in it.

I've not yet dared to tow our caravan at more than 45 yet.
I took a giant trailer down to Bodmin years ago - all was well on the way down, but, with the extra mass on board, it started snaking as we began to descend a long hill at the start of the return. I successfully fought it all the way down to the bottom, where the speed dropped enough to come out of the snake. My co-driver had remained totally silent through all the excitement (an ex-rally-driver, he was), but I was closer to crashing the thing than at any point down the hill when he suddenly took off his seat-belt and said "I won't be needing that any more - my arse is gripping the seat!".

Maybe I'm in a minority, but when I see those LED displays I slow down and try to get myself in the green.
Obviously I see that as a challenge as much as those who want to register the fastest speed.

In Ireland, if you get it into the green, the display says "Thank You" at the final part of your approach to the sign - and they are solar powered, so you can just stick them anywhere and leave them there.

Are the UK ones rechargeable or is there a ground socket affair that they're plugged into?

Most areas have them with solar panels and wind generators, round here even the fixed position ones seem to be battery powered and require the batteries to be changed every couple of weeks. (East Staffs seem to have the sensible ones)

In Hilderstone they used to have a system where the community speed watch were at one end of the village and the official camers were at the other. So everyone who speeded up after going past the community cameras got caught by the others. Some people got caught by both.

Simple solution. Static speed camera, job done. If the pricks in the camera vans were actually interested in road safety theyd spend their salaries on static speed cameras because NOBODY speeds past one of those. The mobile speed vans do absolutley nothing to deter speeding but then again thats the purpose. Creep a few mph over on a dead staright road with nothing in front of you and theres some massive jeb end in a poncey van ready to take some cash from your account. There is too much money to be made from the motorist so why actually make any real effot to make people stay within the limits?

Where does all the money actually go that they make from speed cameras?

I think it goes back to central gov and they then give some back to councils. This money used to be ring fenced but not any longer, so it can be spent on whatever by local councils, not just road safety related projects.

Those moaning about speed traps and cameras need reminding of all the fatalities around Stafford, one on the Lichfield Road, one on Baswich lane. Next time it might be someone you care about.

The speed limit is there for safety reasons.

Whilst not justifying speeding in any way, to imply that all or even most fatalities around town are caused by speeding is erroneous. Accidents do have other contributory factors you know.
