Baswich Community Speedwatch

Saw the community speed camera numpties on Baswich Lane this evening. They pointed their camera at me, even though I was so obviously NOT speeding, as I was almost level with them. Utterly pointless.

And a sanctimonious looking bunch of elderly fcukwits they looked too.

Quite well-hidden, genuine speed van on Eccleshall Road around midday, probably got few from off of the motorway

I live just off Baswich Lane and I've seen people driving along it at speeds approaching 60 mph. I've even had drivers speed up when I've been crossing the road when walking my dogs.

I don't disagree that there's a speeding problem on Baswich Lane, or Porlock Ave for that matter. It's just a shame that plod can't deal with it properly rather than 'empowering' a bunch of people who have no power to do anything except look important.

Comes back to your comment earlier about the lack of police visibility and action regarding motoring offences.

I suppose if those in power hadn't wasted all that money on a new police HQ together with not being able to sell the land where the old one was, there might actually be the funds available for more front-line policing.

I think the guys doing the community speed watch just want to make people think about their speed along Baswich Lane. If it helps slow a few people down then it's got to help.

Unfortunately the Police only react and aren't proactive nowadays in all areas of policing.

I'm going to reply to this as I'm allegedly one of those people you describe - you might think I'm old, but frankly I don't. Sanctimonious? Not really. Most people speed, I know I have. Yes, the camera would have been pointed at you, just as it would at every vehicle going past.

The whole purpose of speedwatch is to remind people about the speed they travel at. The ideal would be to not have to record anyone's speed, but in the 5 years I've been involved, that has never happened. So, despite wearing hi-viz and having a warning sign, the fastest speed we've recorded is 56mph, and many are regularly 45+ mph on Baswich Lane. Yes, it's a straight road, a busy road, but it is also a residential road with a mix of older and younger people. We've also recorded speeds up to 40mph close to Leasowes, just after school finishing time.

So you tell me, what is an acceptable speed to travel on that road?

The data we collect from speedwatch goes to the safer roads partnership, to help inform them of where there might be issues.

If seeing us gets people to remember it's a 30mph limit, and they slow down, that is job done as far as I'm concerned.

I have moved posts related to the Baswich Community Speedwatch project to their own thread.

Thanks. :)

I remember, back in the '70s, when radar traps involved a device about the size of a suitcase, there being one on Baswich Lane, where the hedge steps back, past the bottom of Porlock Avenue. They caught loads, of course, and had a few lads pulling them in down by the church.

"That'll be it for a while", a lot of people thought - only to zoom through another one on the Wednesday morning - and another on the Friday.

I think it may have been part of some course from the (then) Police Headquarters, but it did have a very noticeable effect for some months....

Personally I see them as a reminder to check my speed, I know they arent targetting me personally, I see them like those lit signs at Gnosall, I know it doesnt do anything but it still makes me reduce my speed.

There's a part of the Nantwich by-pass that has dropped from 40 to 30 - I only noticed because I wondered why I didn't see any 40 repeaters on the lampposts - then I saw a 40mph limit sign as I re-entered the 40 limit - it took me several passes through it over a period of time before I finally spotted where the new 30 limit started - I would have been much happier to have my attention drawn to it by somebody that had no power of sanction than I would by receiving a fixed penalty notice through the post.

The new 30 limit in Great Bridgeford is similar, you do have to spot it.....

Not sure that the effect is consistent though. It seems to me that those who are concentrating on the complex task of driving when they're behind the wheel will either comply with instructions or will notice warnings. We all have lapses of concentration sometimes and need to be reminded of where we are and what we're doing. But there's a body of people who switch off from their surroundings once they're inside the vehicle, and it's hard to get through to this lot. Yesterday evening I went to Stone. A young woman overtook me at c 50 going up the Stone Road, where the limit is 40, then settled down to a steady 55 once on the 60-limit section of the A34. Entering Stone, where it's 40, she steamed past and off ahead of me at c 50 again. Curious. Not racing, just oblivious. I dunno.

I know Baswich lane but don’t use it very often, maybe once or twice a year. With the exception of the bridges, where the road is narrower, I can’t say it has struck me as a particularly dangerous road. Has there been a history of accidents along there? If so, I am surprised there have been no fixed cameras fitted.
I think the application of speed limits is one that needs a wider discussion, the 30 mph limit was introduced back in the 1930’s and has been used on quite a differing range of roads ever since. If we want to reduce the average speed along a road perhaps having a higher limit but one that more would see as appropriate would encourage more drivers to observe it?
There will always be a few nutcases flouting the speed limit by large margins irrespective of how low it is.

Is that up to date because it seems a remarkably long time since there was an accident on Baswich Lane.

There are clearly areas close by that suffer far worse though. Just look at the accidents at the two mini roundabouts at the top of Radford Bank!
Look at Tesco on Newport Road - where there's "too many to display"...

there used to be one of those big LED-on-a-stick things at the bottom of baswich lane that lit up to "warn" you of the speed you were doing.. i dare say they removed it for exactly the same reason that i used to enjoy it being there - i.e. idiots like me seeing how fast you could get it to clock..

It only read up to 199mph, but I'm not sure how far up it was actually calibrated.
