What are we watching on TV?

Just coming to the end of series 3 of Amazon's Prime TV series 'Vikings.'

I can't deny I'm sort of hooked. Ragnar Lodbrok (a sort of Viking King Arthur) and his lads (and believe me in this series the women are just as bad as the men, if not worse) are a pretty rough bunch … a bit like a working man's club in Dudley on a Saturday night. (Yeah I know, working men's clubs are pretty much long gone, how sad that is.)

The stuff you watch on lockdown that you'd probably not of watched otherwise. In some ways a bit of a bonus.

Well, the first episode of The Sweeney tonight, the one containing the immortal "We're The Sweeney, son - and we haven't had any dinner!" and ending with large brawl, containing input from Alan Lake, who was fairly handy in a real brawl.

It's nice to be able to recognise all the cars, and be reminded about the technological realities* of the times, trying to find a phone, and rushing to get a film developed.

Really sets the scene, without firing all the fireworks off in one go.

Great stuff!

* and how easy it was to steal a Mini. A chap I worked with bought one for a project and we got it to his place on a trailer, but when we got it to his house, in rather a posh road in N-u-L, we couldn't find the keys to unlock the steering, so we couldn't push it off the trailer. By this stage, the neighbours had come out to glare at us and one in particular gave me a 'funny look' when I declared "I'll show you how to steal a Mini" and got the steering free in a short time.

I paid little attention to this chap, but he was a police inspector and grilled my friend about me for some time after I'd had left to take the trailer back.

I had a mini when I lived in Mynors Street and I parked it round the back of the Prince of Wales one night. When I came out of the pub I opened the door and was about to drive off when I realised the steering wheel had one of those leather glove things on it. Definitely not my Mini !!! Mine was parked a couple of cars down. Keys fitted .. but then in those days you could buy just about every sort of key in Halfords. Car security was a joke.
I'm glad whoever owned it had put that glove on or I'd have driven it home maybe. I'd have ended up with a part in 'Gone in Sixty Seconds,' or the nick !!!

I too remember when the 70's were 50 years ago.

Almost like it were yesterday.
I'm watching "Life on Mars" and finding it a bit confusing at times. I sort of lapse into thinking it's a 1970s series rather than something done about 10+ years ago. Mind you, I wouldn't mind owning a gold Mk 3 Cortina.

I want a Mk 3, in yellow, black vinyl roof, double headlights, slatted back window and 2 go faster stripes down the sides.
I'm sure @Gramaisc has a photo of a white one, whenever there's a Classic Car show up Bingley Hall/Show Ground, it's always up there. Looks gorgeous.

Wait until you get to the episodes where they're talking about technology from that era.
"Tomorrow man" springs to mind with John Hurt and Arthur Daly.

Googling that episode finds this gem :)

Det. Insp. Jack Regan: It says here "The cursor will guide the operator..." What's a cursor?

Det. Sgt. George Carter: Someone we nick for obscene language.

I'm watching the latest series of 'Outlander' on Amazon Prime. Been going a few years now. It's a time travel story, but not SciFi. It's about an English nurse from 1945 who is suddenly transported back in time to the Scotland of 1743 (a few of years prior to Culloden.)

It's basically a romance, with a lot of guttural Scottish history, although as the series proceeds it creeps up towards the American War of Independence. The lady in question flits a little bit back between the 18th and 20th centuries, (she actually qualifies as a Doctor in the modern time and this creates big problems for her when she goes back. Witch ? Unnatural ? Does she use her back knowledge and mess with the timeline ?) All good time travel questions .. not easily answered.

I'm a sucker for time travel stories.
