I thought this at first, but it was hovering over water and I thought they just ate mammals? Or was it perhaps watching the grass at the shore.Kestrel
Although its markings are distinctive in identifying the bird, 'hovering' is a real give away. Other birds may appear stationary when aided by a strong wind, but to my knowledge kestrels are the only ones who gain remain stationary by flapping their wings!Kestrel
Its not stafford, but any idea what this is? Was hovering over the water in a dam, about 500m above sea level. Was a pair but I only managed to get pics of the one:
Something noisy over the Isobel trail at lunchtime, only glanced a few times as I was running but it was definitely hunting.

Avian line? We have a crow that lives nearby, white head, and patches, but the rest is dark grey/black. Old crow? Wish I knewSpotted something odd in the avian line a couple of days ago. Looked like a fairly well built crow but head, neck & shoulders a mid brown colour and rest of body a pale buff colour.
