I believe that they're doing that - the Pendelinos will be eleven cars instead of nine and Stoke platforms are being extended...

Difficult with the British loading gauge, but there was a trial once. Common on the continent, though. Been on these myself :-

It may not be quite apparent in this photo, but the viewpoint is on the road bridge over the railway ( the corner of the OHLE gantry can be seen ) where the railway also goes over the Meese Brook adjacent to Izaak Walton's cottage, a few hundred yards from Norton Bridge. A bridge over a bridge...

Network Rail have decided on a variation of option A. That is putting it just over 100 metres further east from our place.
That's better than it was going to be, but not as good as the other two routes would have been.
