Couldn't they go up on the roof? That'd be quite cool. Especially on a day like today, brrr.
in there lies the answer, well said Withnail.

Out of sight out of mind, and if there is any fag butts dropped it's on the roof, again out of sight out of mind, except for those who choose to smoke up there.
Surely a small space on the roof space can be tweaked to house these people?

...health and safety no doubt plays a part in 'smokers' being up on a roof smoking til their hearts content.

Could cigarette butts go into their Mr. Fusion thing?

I'd say the majority of people who will be walking around the "new-but-falling-to-bits building" will be Council Tax payers. If they own or rent a property then they will no doubt pay Council Tax and most likely they will live locally.
That statement is a fact, but their council tax did not pay for the building, so really the statement could just equally apply to any group of people. For example the majority of people walking past the building eat meat, or drink tea, or in fact anything unrelated.
The point is that anyone walking past the building eating drinking or whatever can do as they please, they may not be County Council employees. The smokers that I saw congregating around the front doors clearly were CC employees as they had their I.D. lanyards hanging around their necks. It is therefore different.
The reason they are there smoking and not somewhere else say for example a designated smoking shelter or area is because Staffs CC forgot or didn't bother to provide one when they commissioned the build - thus the fact that staff are doing this and considering it doesn't really look great is squarely the County Council's fault.

There is essentially no difference that I can see between the hoards of CC staff I saw standing around smoking in groups and generally blocking the (at the moment much reduced) gangway and groups of kids who hang about their local shop in groups and often get vilified for doing so
I agree totally. That wasn't my point. I was being pedantic about the "Daily Mail esque" cries of "waste of our council tax".

They should have considered provision of smokers when designing and building the place.

Incidentally, did you know that they have 2 directorates now.. People and Place..So someone has the address:

Mr A Councilworker
Director of Place
Place
Staffordshire Place

Good that...

On the MV Ulysses, plying between Holyhead and Dublin, the only area where smoking is allowed is outside on Deck 11, around the green funnel structure at the stern. It can be fairly windy at times.

In relation to things falling from buildings, I remain impressed by the faith exhibited by the people that have been parking under the scaffolding at the back of the old hospital, in front of Wickes..

I work in Staffordshire place and although there were problems with the heating at first these seem to have been rectified, overall I'm very impressed with the buildings and the facilities compared to the previous office we were in. With regards smoking, I was told from the off that we weren't to smoke anywhere near or in between the buildings.

I've also seen this previously where non-smokers tend to exaggerate occasions when they've walked past smokers, I've only rarely see people smoking in between the buildings

The vast majority of funding for councils come from central government, not from Council Tax. Therefore really, the whole of the UK tax payers paid for our new buildings. And since there are more tax payers outside of Staffordshire then in it, you could conclude that the vast majority of funding did in fact come from Non Staffordshire Tax Payers, not Staffordshire Council Tax payers. Just a thought....

I'm pretty sure I paid something towards this building, if not through Council Tax, then through Income Tax.

Or does the government find its money in the crock of gold at the end of the rainbow? :)

Yes that last sentence is meant to be a joke...

When do you plan on picketing McDonalds against child obesity or all of the breweries in your crusade against alcoholism? Why stop there, drag your soap box of to the gates of Smith Kline Glaxo and let's rid the world of all those druggies.

Maybe you should open up a new thread in the "General Chat" forum.

Good idea. :)

This thread is for discussion of smoking outside Staffordshire Place. If anyone wants to start a discussion about the morality of smoking/rights of smokers/etc. then a new thread would be the way to go!
