Whilst driving over to Rocester this afternoon I went through Weston and saw 2 local hi-viz wearing locals wielding a speed gun and noting stuff down on a clipboard.
Does anyone know their plans???

I think they took my plate doing 36/37 ish...!!

There was a lady in the news a while ago, who had stopped all the speeders going past her house to fast, by wearing a hi-viz & pointing a hairdryer at the motorists...i think she had a clip board too...

Community Speedwatch. Lots of places have them.
Local residents ( mostly retired teachers with too much time on their hands) trained to use speed check "guns" & carry out random speed checks in their area. They take the reg number of "offenders" & pass them onto the chief constable's office. If you're reported you'll get a letter advising you of your crime & that will be kept on record. If you're a repeat offender you might get a visit from someone with more authority.
The speedwatchers have no legal authority so you won't get fined etc, its more of a deterrent really. As I said, too much time on their hands.

Enjoying a drop of red.

Or maybe people who don't want people speeding through their village?

It's the locals complaining about the speeding through their village that are actually doing the majority of the speeding offences. It's always somebody else of course, never them.
You have data to back this up?

Either way, speeding in a built-up area is a no no, so it really matters little where the speeders come from, only that the speeding stops or is seriously cut down, surely.

In Hilderstone, and possibly elsewhere, there was a setup (stitchup?) where the Community Speedwatch used to set up prominently at the start of the village, most motorists slowed down for them then speeded up again just at about the point where the police were waiting with their speed gun.

The problem at Weston is that the main Stafford road by the church is too narrow, so that's the council's fault. The 'safe' speed limit when two HGVs travelling in opposite directions meet is about 0mph.

This makes sense I suppose. If you're driving through Weston via the A518 you're more likely to watch your speed as you've just had to slow from 60 down to 30.

Not exactly data but when our village parish council we're looking into setting this up & get camera vans a trial was carried out & (I can't remember exact details) the majority of vehicles over the limit were local residents. The speedwatch didn't happen for a few years but vans were sited pretty much immediately.
P. S. I agree totally with you speeding in residential areas should be discouraged by whatever means necessary.
