Does anyone know of any good and cheap webcam/alarm systems?
eBuyer.com are selling a wireless IP camera that doesn't need to remain connected to a PC for £55 (free delivery). The wireless isn't too reliable though so I's suggest it stays ethernetted up to your router.
It can be set to email instantly some snapshots to any given email address, so even if they spotted the camera and ripped it out - you'd already have some pics of the criminals!!

I bought one to set up - CHICKENCAMLIVE.COM lol.... but my coop is WAAAAyyy up; the garden and as the wireless was unreliable I decided to get a refund. Also, it stated that it was WPA capable but I could only get WEP to work at all, although I may have had a faulty one.
With the ethernet cable in place though, I'd highly recommend it.

Depends on the quality you want. Cheap solutions are about, but the quality is poor. A decent solution will cost you £200 each just for the cameras. Looked into it once for a customer, outdoor cams have different requirements for vision distance at night, usually a built in IR unit can only see 10' at best. As well as cameras you need either a PC or a recording unit (essentially a HD in a box). A PC is preferred, but it means leaving a box on 24/7 and of course it will get stolen, so has to be uploading to the net.

As lots of laptops now have cams in them, I'm tempted to write something to grab pics of the user and FTP them up to my own webspace along with IP address it is using. If it had GPS I could find the bugger too.

Another alert: whilst I was in Bristol last night someone attempted to break into my 90yr old neighbour's house....smashed the glass in the back door, started to remove it so they could get in unharmed, and (thankfully) were disturbed. They hid round by my house (which we know cos there's a trail of blood outside, which will hopefully nail the scrote(s)) and then did one.

Keep your eyes peeled, and your houses secure. If anyone sees/hears/knows anything please contact the feds.

Thanks for keeping us all posted, Andreas Rex. It's terrible that the same area is being targeted over and over again, especially given that this time the occupant was clearly a lady who would be in no position to defend herself. :(

As a long term resident it saddens me that we have this in this particular area as it's never happened. It also saddens me that people are taking walls or fences down to create parking spaces and at the same time opening up areas to make it easy for "scrotes" to wonder in and gain access! Security seems to be sacrificed in the name of convenience for some while others may suffer for it.
I'm glad I don't have anything of particluar value to be stolen and I've just to the end of a spell of weekends away.

Its not even the financial aspect as such, but more the invasion of privacy and the knowledge that little punishment will ever be handed down. I'm still a firm believer that a burglar will tell few where he is targeting, so if you catch one best not to get the police involved. There is always room for a new patio.

Call me a hypocrite but I believe stealing personal possessions is a worse crime than stealing from a company, purely down to the personal aspect. Whilst I've never been burgled myself a few people I know have, and it changes them a little.

Did I ever mention a ******* hate thieves? :grr:
