The station hotel very nice. Wasn't there a fire here and it was left to ruin by the owners ??

in all fairness as much as these buildings should be saved I don't want coming of the taxes I pay to benefit or help private owners who have cocked or cannot be arsed thank you very much. Besides councils can hardly run their own builds let alone others.

"...taxes i pay to benefit or help private owners who have cocked up or cannot be arsed..."?!
You had your eyes and ears closed to the government bailing out companies, for the last few decades?

.

Seem to remember hearing that the hotel and the new railway station were involved in some sort of planning corruption in the early 1960s. Plus ca change, as they say in Doxey.

The Station Hotel (originally the North Western Hotel) was built in 1866 and demolished in 1972. I've never heard of a fire there, although fires at Stafford hotels in other locations have certainly occurred.

Trust the Newslater to print something accidentally hilarious.

"Councillor Frances Beatty, cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said: "You need only take one look around the borough at the huge amount of investment being delivered to our area to see what an important role Ted has played at this council. He will be a difficult act to follow,

Difficult indeed... Permanent gridlock. Part-time hospital. No university. No sports facilities. No libraries. Empty buildings. Empty shops. Crumbling roads. Most of us wonder how those connected with planning dare to show their faces around Stafford.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
Lots of historic buildings or buildings which should have been thought of as important or worth saving have been destroyed since the war. Stafford aren't the only ones to be guilty of this unfortunately.

Telford born and bred so wasnt even here, but why did people stand by and let these places be knocked down?

There was much grumbling, but little else - the White Lion was carefully demolished, to be rebuilt elsewhere, which seemed a decent compromise - then it was destroyed - later on, the High House was saved by public acclaim after a campaign largely led by Derek Holt, after everything else had gone, so it became clear what the reality could be...

...and it was promised that this was the end to our traffic woes...
