A question about Automatic Windows Updates

Is it usual for Windows Automatic Updates to change the Internet Explorer to a newer one? Or could it be something my son has clicked on and not admitting to?

It has suddenly changed to Internet Explorer 8 (I think it's 8 :?: ,we started off originally on IE6) and got all sorts of new features on it. But as I'm not very computer literate it's doing my head in,not doing what I want it to do :grr:

I'm afraid IE8 became an essential update, rather than optional. This means it will have been downloaded to your PC, but as far as I know when it tries to install you had to say OK. I may be wrong though, as I did mine manually.

Is there anything in particular you are having trouble with? Post it here and I'm sure we can help.

Thanks for offers of help,

Right.....3rd time of typing this ,as I clicked on something and managed to lose the internet connection (was still getting e-mail though)

How do I get rid of the favourites tabs ,on the favourites bar ,top of the screen ? They were on there when I switched the computer off and still there now it has been re-started. The only way I am able to remove them is to delete them completely from my Favourites List. If I keep looking at various favourite sites throughout the day they are going to mount up.)

I was much better at the paper tape/punch card / floppy disk/key to disc machines in my earlier days

You need to click the view menu at the top left, go to toolbars and then un-tick the one that says favourites.

If you don't have a view menu then you first need to go to tools on the top right(ish), toolbars and then tick the menu bar.

Hope that helps :)

Those were the days.

I still have a punched tape editor, if you get stuck.

staffordjas, google announced in march that all its products would no longer work on IE6, which for all intents and purposes meant that the internet just wouldn't work on IE6 either.. ergo, microsoft made the upgrade a mandatory one, to avoid a billion "MY INTERNETZ ARE B0RKEN!!1" support calls..

you'll get used to IE8 before too long; my old man did and he was in exactly the same "argh nothing works the way i expect it to work!!" boat when i upgraded him..

As dirtybooby has rightfully pointed out, you do need to keep up with the times otherwise stuff can stop working. Some of the latest websites don't view right at all in older versions of Internet Explorer.

Still blame it on your son though staffordjas... just for fun!

Getting a bit more used to it now I've played about on the computer all day. Not much housework done today though!!!!

Got it in the normal mode at the moment but it has been going very slow for months now. It goes faster when son manages to put it in 'Safe Mode' but we are unable to use lots of the other programs in that.

It said on the Windows 'Help' page that if it is going at normal speed in Safe Mode,it means it is a recent program addition that is slowing it down.Says to do a 'System Restore' which will take it back to the stage it was at when it was last working properly.
But will that still keep it at this new IE8 or will we have to load all the new updates back on again?

er, you shouldn't be using windows in safe mode! safe mode is a diagnostic tool, and definitely shouldn't be used for day-to-day browsing, office applications, etc..

i've never used/trusted system restore, so can't comment on that i'm afraid.. if you were to restore to a point prior to you upgrading to IE8 then, yes, i would imagine it will roll you back to IE6..

tbh i'd get wmr or someone to look at your PC! :)

I definitely wouldnt try restoring your PC back too far staffordjas, if it is running as slow as you say then it's quite possible that you have some kind of malware running that shouldn't be.
If you need assistance let me know, I'm not expensive.

I suspect that she may turn up in one of her micro-skirts and negotiate the price lower than you anticipate..
