All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace

Episode One.

"You love only those that deserve it". If you are a heartless barstard that really needs to get laid that is.*

Peerless programming.

Do you want to understand how the financiers/bankers of this world jammed their collective feet in the door on their relentless march to screw us all over? Here's a primer. Compu-Geeks may also enjoy the early history of their smashed idealism.

*An allusion to Ayn Rand, not shoes, i hasten to add - having said that...

Episode Two - The Use and Abuse of Vegetational Concepts

Exemplary. If only for the titling.

Also, good game to play - guess where the ad breaks have been factored in for overseas sales. Easy with this one.

More coherent than the last in placing machines, or at least machinated thought, to the fore.

In summing up a CBA of the BBC this shall rank highly.

Makes you want to slit the throats of corporate bankers

Mind you so does Xfactor and Match of the Day

Amongst many, many other things.

But let's not be too mechanical about it.

A counterpoint to its otherwise magnificence - i often feel whilst watching that i'm being spoon-fed, no counter-clockwise contradictories contained. Not that i'm complaining over much - generally the thesis is sound.

The first one wasn't massively convincing - not that it wasn't completely and utterly true, just that the role of the 'machine' in the story (and Greenspan's supposed thrall to it) was less obvious than the role of the 'all too human heart'(lessness) was.

This one is more coherent in suggesting that computer models made a real difference to the human response to data, and the subsequent interpretation and extrapolation being 'used and abused'.

I thought, anyway - either way and for both instalments, this is top quality programming of which we can still unjustifiably be proud.

Episode Three - The Monkey in the Machine and the Machine in the Monkey

Contains scenes that international broadcasters include in their news bulletins but we do not - you have been warned.

Slightly incoherent yet oddly compelling - are you a man or a mouse?

The Belgians get a bad press

5 million humans are murdered but its OK because the world is still getting copper and other resources to fuel our appetites
