Just heard about a huge crash on the Smiler ride at Alton towers today around 2pm. People still being rescued from the ride. At least 4 people with serious injuries. Thoughts are with them for a full recovery and I hope Alton Towers are made to pay. Apparently the ride was allowed to start with a carriage still stuck on the track according to the news.
Disgraceful!!

One things for sure , I'm glad It wasn't me on that ride. But wish i was getting the compensation!
I hope Alton towers have to pay out big time .
No money in the world will ever erase that incident from minds of the unfortunate people on that ride .
I love Alton towers but everytime we go i keep thinking of "final destination 4 ? ".
Today just proves that the rides are never 100% safe

Indeed. Nor the minds of those who watched on helplessly knowing what was about to happen.

Nothing is 100% safe I agree, and anything that gives an adrenaline rush must carry additional risk. However, there are supposed to be numerous safety precautions in place. If the previous carriage didn't clear that loop then a braking system should have halted the following carriage at a safe point etc. There will certainly need to be a lot of questions answered, and if what people are saying is true that people tried to tell the operators that a carriage was stuck, yet people were still boarded on the ride.... then it's VERY serious.

Like @Alee says - that ride has had too many issues since opening in 2013. Why risk it? Shut the bloody thing down for good!

There are a lot of reports that the ride had problems earlier in the day, had been closed and that they then sent an empty carriage round to test the system. Some people are saying that this was the empty carriage struck by the full one. If they really sent a full carriage round when an empty one had not cleared the ride then fan & shit seem words that could form an appropriate expression. One has to question whether this ride should continue in use.

Sympathy to all thosed involved in the accident and who witnessed it. And special thoughts to those who are seriously injured.

Not sure I will ever ride on The Smiler when I eventually get to Alton Towers again. Seems a bit prone to problems for my liking.

I did say that no amont of money would erase that memory from their minds. hopefully they should make a full recovery physicaly . They all deserve compensation and in my opinion so does everyone who witnessed it.
I think you've taken my post wrong . Well I wrote it wrong . I didn't mean it to sound so selfish

I was only there 2 weeks ago - watching my 14 y/o go on it as I was too much of a wuss! Can't even imagine what you'd be going through if your child was involved. :(

If someone is, as reported, going to lose a limb as a result of the accident - I really can't see any way that the ride would ever open again.

Enjoying a drop of red.

One of the seriously injured had lost a leg. Fancy swapping with him/her for the compo?

As for those who witnessed it, why do they deserve compensation? Many of us witness horrible things in our lives but that gives us no entitlement to compensation.

Your interest in receiving compensation is symptomatic of the times I suppose...

I didn't no the severity of the injuries. I was just Trying to say that there is not enough compensation in the world to make what happened ok.when I say compensation for the people who witnessed , I mean getting their tickets refunded.

@Alee I think people have misunderstood you, but I haven't. Your statement of "I wish I was getting the compensation" was merely a way of expressing that it will quite rightly cost Alton towers massively for such injuries.

That's the problem with forums sometimes. Had you said the EXACT same sentence face to face, where people could have read your thoughts and gestures they would have known precisely how you meant it.

Don't let it bother you ;)

The only kind of rollercoaster you'll ever get me on again is a single carriage one. If they were all not multiple carriages then this particular kind of accident could just never happen - yes the ques would be bigger, but to me that is the singular best safety measure do-able.
