Ok folks...moving on from the Desert Island thingy...here's another question for you..

WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ AND WHY DID YOU READ IT?

This shouldn't take so long to mull over as the Island movies thread, but heh...here's mine

Book: Awakening the Buddha Within by Lama Surya Das

Why: Starting getting into buddhism last year, currently studing mediation and wanted to see how the 'professionals' do it :D

Ok, over to you guys....

Not been in a book reading mood for awhile now, but the last one was, The autobiography of Johnny Cash.

It was a present from Rich Upsetter for Tensh. My Dad is a huge fan of Cash, plus the film was out and then he died. . .

bloomin' good read, he had quite a tale to tell and I like to hear about someone's life if they've lived it to the max. Which is why I enjoyed Howard Marks - aka Mr Nice Guy.

Hmm i was going to say Jake Arnott too but my good lady gort there first! Seriously good author well worth checking out .. The long firm and True crime are my faves

So second choice would have to be

L Armstrong "it's not about the bike" excellent read and one enormously brave bloke !

Top man!

Howard Marks, went to see him in Wolverhampton a couple of years ago, excellent.

I was frist introduced to him by my sister, I was driving for a living and didn't get the time to read much so she bought me Howard's book in cassette form, with him reading it. Marvellous.

That wonderful soft Welsh twang he has and an amazing life!

And did you know, his Father-in-law used to be general manager at what is now Alstom, Lichfield Road site and they(his wife's) family used to live in Acton Trussell in the mid -sixties

Last one was Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, for the umpteenth time, just bought an old hardback edition of it from Ebay. and it is an absolute classic book. Currently going through a sci-fi, post-industrialist, anti-utopian phase.

Thoroughly recommended, The Book of Dave by Will Self, anybody that has been through a divorce, CSA etc, will love it.

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, hard work very long, but also very good.

Ok, no probs Miss T ;0)

Here is the next question...

WHAT SONG WOULD YOU LIKE PALYING AT YOUR FUNERAL?

In other words, is there one that summarises you, your life, your hopes and dreams etc or would you use it as a big BOG OFF to the world! And if anyone says, ST16 till I die I will just laugh! :D

Here's mine...

Tower Of Strength by The Mission.

Don't ask me why...just lurve it and always have...it's powerful, there's a lot there and better yet it is a whole 11 minutes long! That will be the ultimate kick in the bums to the congregation...Sit through that as my last wish HeHe !!! Brilliant song....

Over to you guys!!

Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991 by Michael Azerrad

Why? Because it's basically looking at a scene and the bands that I grew up on and still listen to today.

Understanding Poverty and social exclusion, and why because i needed to pass and exam on the subject of the book,

I know this should be in the rant thread but i think its wrong that i had to buy a book that was written by my lecturer, so this guy gets paid twice he gets his salery and then any money from the sale of his book, of which there is only 4 in the uni library and a class of 75. And you need this book to pass his exam. sorry about the rant but once i started i had to get it of my chest

Just finished reading 'Join Me' by Danny Wallace (friend of Staffordian Dave Gorman) - it was a nice easy read, he accidently starts a cult known as the Karma army, who have to carry out random acts of kindness on a Friday.

Emma: Jane Austin, because I hadn't read it before.
I have a collection of classics that I read between other stuff. I buy them at fetes and jumble sales and never pay more than 20p.

I like pretending to read Mills and Boon or Daniel Steele at the firestation it unnerves folks for some reason.

wait, so instead of teaching you this stuff, bit by bit, as he is supposed to - he simply compiled it all into a single book which he then orders you to buy??

that's well shady lol..

'The Interpretation of Murder' by Jed Rubenfield or whatever his name is.

Read it because I get through a book or two a week on my commute to Birmingham, so often go to Tesco's, where the books are about £3 each. It happened to be the most appealing at the time.

Was alright, but nothing thrilling.

Now reading 'The Godfather' by Mario Puzo - at last - which is ace.

One of my lecturers at the uni did the same; we were sposed to buy his book at a cost of about £14, and IMO, it was significantly worse than a lot of other texts on the same subject.

I found a copy in my house, left by a previous occupant, complete with all his notes and references to other texts - very handy :)

I think the lecturer in question retired a couple of years ago, due to frequent alcohol poisoning.

Yip exact same happened to me. One copy in the library. Whole course was geared around the content of his book and exam was the same. What the fecker failed to check was that his overpriced excuse for a book was out of print, there was one copy for sale in the book shop with a three month wait. 150 students??? He ended up reproducing large sections (photocopying) of the book for us and distributing them to each student.....serves the fecker right. No one bought the book, his faculty had a large photocopying bill and he obviously only photocopied the stuff that was relevant making it easier to revise.....suppose he couldn't have us all failing.
