Annoying phone calls....

Have been getting the full range of nuisance calls, "you have had an accident in last few years" "have you worked in industry" "have you made a will" "you don't appear to have signed up for free daytime/weekend phone calls" surveys for mobility problems. I have stored some of the numbers in the phone and labelled them.. err.. appropriately :D If I get International/out of area calls I pick up and just listen, sometimes it just cuts off or you hear the call centre in the background and I turn these off. I have signed up to the preference service, it did seem to work years ago but despite re registering last year they are on the increase, would ex-directory work ? :hmm:

I've never existed in the phone book and I still get the odd one. TPS seems to be becoming less and less effective.

But, the Information Commisioner's Office does act on the odd occasion - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-30713524 .

Gramaisc has just mentioned it, but I would seriously recommend you register your phone numbers on the TPS at http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html

Since being on that register I have received very very few unsolicited calls. I still get the odd one from companies that I have given my number to and missed the checkbox. However, if I do ever get an unsolicited call, as soon as I mention I'm on TPS they hang up as quick as anything. I understand that all organisations that 'cold call' are meant to check the TPS prior to making calls. If they call a number that's on the TPS they can be fined.

Does this work for mobiles? ...Too idle to look it up..

TPS is a waste of time. My number is registered with them and it has never been listed in any directory. I still get these calls.

Your personal details get sold by lots of companies and you cannot do anything about it.

I get loads of this crap too, my responses have varied depending on time of day/current mood/alcohol consumption from a simple hanging up to asking what colour knickers they were wearing (that certainly confused the poor lass, guess it wasn't in the script but she pushed on regardless!).

I totally agree. I've worked for a few different sales/call centers*, the worst one was actually a Stafford company, everyday we were given either a phone directory or a wad of A4 sheets with home phone numbers on & just had to work our way through them, if anyone mentioned anything like TPS we would just put the phone down & move onto the next number...

I'm only able to provide my point of view on it, which I have. I'm assuming you've conducting some in-depth research to conclude that it's a complete waste of time for anyone else to even bother?

I once got told by a call centre person that the TPS was irrelevant as they operate via a foreign phone exchange, and then carried on trying to sell me something as if that made it all OK. I called him a word I shall not print here.

Read my post. It's my point of view as well.

My "in depth" research is having to answer calls from call centres who should never be able to get my number as it's registered with TPS and ex-directory (if such a thing exists now).

I have had several calls over the past few days (two from the same number 10 minutes apart). All the calls came from 0161 814 9030, which appears to be regarding hearing loss insurance.
I keep getting those , even more so this last week and from that same number asking for me by my name. I once blew sons sports whistle down the phone, which deafened me as well as resulting in them keeping my phone ringing for the next hour or so .

Hubby received one last week asking is that a Mr **** , so he went along with it and said it was . They asked if he had ever worked in a noisy environment to which he just kept shouting "Sorry, I can't hear you , I'm deaf after working in a noisy factory" several times. They hung up!

I did once hang up on hubbys Korean cardiac consultant by mistake when he called with something important, after being plagued by nuisance calls all day . When he rang straight back hubby had to say I'd lost phone reception (Luckily were standing by the doctors reception desk at the time the call came, so I just cut it off rather than giving the mouthful I'd been giving to the pests all day)

My home & mobile number have been registered with TPS almost since the system started. My phone number has not been in the phone book for many years. I still get a significant number of nuisance calls.

I think you have to re-register every so often, i added my and the misses mobile numbers to it about a month ago because of daily calls from accident lawyers and we haven't had any calls now for over a week.
