Sorry if this offends anybody who went there/worked there, but I don't think this place ever properly opened. I've been there a few times and it's always seemed like somewhere for the owners' mates to drink, as opposed to a pub. I'm 100% against pub closures (obviously I appreciate that pubs close for different reasons)...in fact I've taken it upon myself to ensure that as many pubs stay open as possible (:pint:). The Watermill though, with a dreadful selection of drinks* and the cold, white decor, really didn't appeal**.

**in my opinion and that of the group of friends I've been there with

I'm largely in agreement also. I have been in a couple of times with friends - I really wanted to like it as it looks warm and welcoming from the outside & I like that area around Mill Street, as I say from the exterior it ticks all boxes. Get inside though and it is a totally different experience. The place is cold and somewhat stale & the selection of drinks isn't great. It just isn't comfortable - it tempts you from the outside suggesting that it will be all warm and cosy like a traditional Inn with comfy chairs, maybe a roaring log fire and a few paperbacks and newspapers that you can help yourself to. The actual experience is about as far removed from this as you could get and it leaves you feeling that you have been a bit cheated.
I really hope it can open up again but to do so successfully they really are going to need to have a rethink on the interior - They need to decide whether they are trying to go for traditional and cosy or modern and sharp. My personal opinion is that they would be better concentrating on the former as the building lends itself more towards this but at the moment it is really neither. In hard times there isn't really much hope for an establishment that doesn't know what it wants to be

Couldn't have put it better myself, gave the place a fair go for a couple of months when it first opened but it never seemed to gain any 'momentum'.

It's apparently almost up and running (I'm not an investor) and nobody has been murdered yet

Walked past the Water Mill a few times but never went in, seemed to do ok at lunch times but we walked past on a Friday evening about 8 30 and the only person in was a solitary barman and I thought then the place must be struggling.
I do wonder if there is enough trade in Stafford for all our pubs, I had high hopes that the Post House development would see more people around town but when I've been up(although admittadly not very often) whilst not been dead it hasn't been busy either.
Stafford has a number of decent pubs and bars and that makes me wonder whether the lack of trade is due to a change of lifestyle and also the economic situation.

The Greyhound thrives yet it is out of the way for most people, offer what they actually want not what all your competitors offer. I know I go on about it a lot but the Water Mill served Strongbow and Magners, not a USP in my eyes.

A total of 100 Johnsons dry cleaning shops will close across the country, the firm announced today as it revealed sales had plummeted.
Parent firm Johnson Service said the move comes after a review of its dry cleaning operation.
Sales from its 460 dry cleaning shops were down 0.5 per cent in the first six months of the year, while the doomed shops experienced falls of 2.7 per cent.
The closures will take place by the end of the year and there will also be cuts in back office and field teams.
Johnson has shops in the West Midlands in Stafford, Lichfield, Amblecote, Kiderminster, Tettenhall, Smethwick, and Walsall.
There is also one within the Waitrose store in Wolverhampton.
It has not yet been made public where the cuts will fall.
Executive chairman John Talbot said today: “We believe that the measures we have taken will refocus the group into a more streamlined and profitable business.
“We have confidence that our continuing dry cleaning estate will not only be able to withstand the current retail environment but make a telling contribution to the group’s future performance,” he added.

Gotta say I think Asda pizzas off the counter are the best, but they are rarely available when drunk and staggering home!
