I always feel dreadful when I hear about redundancies. When you read media reports of "x job losses" it is easy to forget that each one is a family not sleeping, a mortgage in arrears.

The people at Garden King have my sympathy but, oh my goodness, it was bad. I went there for the first and last time last Autumn, to meet an elderly friend. I hadn't been there since it was Fosters and couldn't believe how depressing, bleak and empty it had become.

A relative works there - hence the insider info - don't think it actually goes until April sorry.

Again it was a big part of my childhood, going to see the winter wonderland and choosing flowers for my mums garden

Its really sad - a combination of the current economy and poor management :(

Definite poor management, I would say. Like you, Fosters was a big part of my childhood - when we moved into a new build, my parents got everything from Fosters, at a time when Dennis Foster still did the deliveries.

Fosters was a slightly scruffy, proper nursery run by people who were obviously obsessed by the place. That was lovely. Meir Park and Fletcher's are different, but really good at what they do and whenever I've been, very busy.

I only visited Garden King once but it really was, strategically, awful. Such a shame when the people who pay the price are probably the ones who slog away trying to make bad ideas work.

If you get the chance, go in to Vienna before everything goes. There is some AMAZING stuff - perfume that won't ever be for sale in Stafford again, Wolford hosiery, bags and coats I don't understand.

The lady's sister had a shop in Newcastle-under-Lyme for many years. It was commonly known as the mini Harrods and much loved. The proprietor died and her sister took the shop in Stafford on a short-term lease to sell off as much of the stock as possible before she returns to Austria. As far as I know, it was always going to close around February.

Seriously - have a look inside while you can.

Apparently the Bank House closed down last year, I'm not sure how I missed that closing down!

Down by The Picture House, it was still open yesterday, I could hear the reels rolling, only just over the howl of the wind as I sheltered from the piercing rain.

I thought that, only repeating second hand gossip!

The Oldies have told me that Garden King (they insist in calling it Fosters?) in Bradely has closed today (they've sold off all the fixtures & fittings over the weekend).

Anyone know if there's any truth in it?

Be quick:

Shame my garden isn't bigger as the current sub £50 price is amazing.

I see that Dollond and Aitchison have gone - a while ago, probably, but the Search doesn't find any mention of it.

And the PandA House has a possession order in the window.
