This view of Foregate, looking towards Greyfriars, is virtually unrecognisable today. The photograph is taken from just beyond the junction with St. Patrick's Street, and the cobbled area and lamppost on the left mark the entrance to Foregate Square.

The large house on the left, with the bay windows, belonged to William Eley, a shoe manufacturer.

Behind the trees on the right are the engineering works of W.H. Dorman whose factory was here before the move to Tixall Road in 1939.

..which is, allegedly, the East side of the road, between Browning Street and Fancy Walk - i.e., where the grass area by the flats is now.

The same bit, from the Browning Street end.

Things have changed so much it is very hard to match up now and then.

This would appear to be here.

This is around here.

The dates of the bottom two would be around the mid-sixties. The Austin/Morris 1100 arrived in late 1962 and that looks like a UHF TV aerial on the near chimney, which would imply 1964 at the very earliest - and that street light looks very modern..

Next door but one looks like they want to sort theirs out, they're never going to get a signal from that.

Jolly good spottage all round. :)

That looks like a Saab 99 passing the 1100, so must be later than 1968.
I'll agree with you there - the headlights and the tall windscreen - I just wasn't confident enough to assert that view - it fits in with the street light as well, that just looks too modern..

Still rather have the 1100 though! The Saab would have been quite unusual back then.

My sisters 1st bf had a black 1 of them, thought he were Queen Bee driving it. Had lights on it like a mod had mirrors on a Vespa. Lit up the country lanes by us like Blackpool Illuminations.

I noticed that VP a few days ago, sadly Ive already got too many projects waiting...

Always liked the BMC 1100/1300, they were like a bigger Mini with just as good roadholding. Almost perfection if they didnt have so many rust traps!
