Always ensure, when dealing with any 'architect' that they are registered with the RIBA and/or ARB, see directory here. The title of architect is to be greatly respected, and given only to those who undertook the 7years+ training. Anyone calling themselves an architect when not registered with the ARB is subject to a fine, so must call themselves architectural designers, architectural technologists or architectural consultants.

Whilst unable to recommend anyone in particular, having never employed an architect, you'll find some established local businesses on the register. Choosing somebody registered with the RIBA or ARB doesn't guarantee you'll get a good service and quality result by any means, but at least you know that you're employing somebody with the right qualifications!

We used Martin Ratcliffe from Barnett Ratcliffe Partnership to design and project manage our house extension a few years ago and have to say they were excellent.

There are differences, Architectural Technologists work on a very broad range of work, and are accredited by CIAT, a body which works closely with both RIBA and CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building). People calling themselves an Architectural Technologist, likewise an Architect, must have a degree in their field and have accredited experience.

That is indeed true - I should have made that clearer, but was simply differentiating from fully qualified architects. Technologists have a degree and are trained in different skills which are designed to fit neatly with the skills of an architect, structural engineer etc. in order to complete the job efficiently. Most practices employ architects, technologists and structural engineers (smaller practices sometimes choose to employ the services of a company of structural engineers, instead of employing full time).
