Does anyone know of anywhere that runs Basic DIY courses in Stafford. I'm awful and need to learn and get on with it. I need to be able to do simple things like drilling and fixing curtain poles etc.. but without messing up the room it's in!

Any advice would be great. Cheers.

Back when TV was good, we had Barry Bucknell, who had several series showing how previously professional tasks could be performed by homeowners themselves - this was, of course, before it all descended into Changing Rooms and Grand Designs, etc....

He almost invented DIY.

For one series he actually built a house.

There was also F J Camm and his many books and magazines, including Practical Householder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_James_Camm - he really knew his stuff, and his elder brother, Syd, designed the Hurricane, of course...

There's a fair chance that there are some good instructional videos on You Tube..

Good post by Gram, no need to do a course and potentially pay for stuff not relevent, just search youtube or Google for guides on pretty much any DIY. Or ask on here.

You can really only learn by doing - and you must be prepared to have some less-than-perfect outcomes, at least at the start..

I'm a big believer is skill swapping!

If you pop me up a curtain pole up, I'll patch up the giant hole you picked with your toes in the sofa....

Vise versa....

You can't know how to do everything, but as a collective we are unstoppable!!!!

Haha! All very true. It is just having the guts to dive in and do it. Off to buy curtain poles this week and I'll try putting them up myself will a bit of self learning off You Tube. If you don't hear back from me…..well….. :)

I think its fair to say most DIY disasters are caused through not having the right equipment / tools for the job in hand
