Been thinking of joining up for a while now and at the moment they have a good deal on an annual membership - £245 for the 12 months.

background:-
haven't used a gym for a good while
want to get semi-fit
thinking Tuesdays and Thursdays and possibly a weekend visit to start with, umm!
live right around the corner

Any thoughts?

Hiya!

I use Beaconside, what are you going to do there? i.e. Will it be free weights/weight machines/cardio machines or classes? What time of day will you be going? There are positives and negatives depending on what you're into.

I won a month free use of Beaconside gym in a raffle a few years ago.

Found it good at weekends as a lot of the students weren't there and it was easy to get on any piece of equipment I wanted.

Had a shock when I first went about 6pm-ish in the week though - the place was full and I was having to go around in the order of the machines being free at the time.

I did think about joining up when the freebie finished.....then the fitness bug wore off !

If you live just around the corner , and likely to go a couple of times each week, I'd say it is ideal at about a fiver a week.

I've got an induction session at Riverside gym later today,so that I can go on a 'pay as you go' afterwards (Wasted so much money paying out for yearly membership in the past, and then not going after the first few months.......... )

thanks postees,

news flash: i joined last night, induction Sunday, fitness a go go, ummm.

i was thinking stretch, jog round (warm up), use a few of the machines (about 40minutes worth), then walk back (warm down) and this would all happen at about 6ish, i know...prime-time, but i don't think i'd like working out in a dead gym, where's the fun in that!

Lets see how the first few months go, sorry, first few weeks go...

I used to jog down to the Sports Arenas gym when it was by matalan. Warmed me up nicely and I could go straight onto the equipment, already warmed up.
(They lost my custom because they wanted to charge me £100 extra for my renewal than the new customers were joining up for at that time, and wouldn't budge on the price!)

Good luck on Sunday! Let us know how you get on.

Sundays and Saturdays are a good bet then, as is Friday night as far as I have noticed :)

What are the facilities like at Riverside, jas? I've never been to take a look!

Ok, had my induction at 4.30pm and plenty of machines around at that time while the instructor was with me. Then at 5pm I was let loose on my own.........the place suddenly filled up and although there were spare machines, I had to hunt around and jump on any that I saw going begging.

On a roll at the moment - I had a good swim this morning and did 76 lengths of the pool. It was quite packed in there as well from 8am to 10am, but managed to swim the whole 2hrs (Got to get my moneys worth! ;) ) with only a few kicks and clouts from passing swimmers.

Then a wobbly legged walk back home to Wildwood :D

We are members of that gym and have joined for the year - overall the facilities are great.

The only problem is the bloomin' kids (school kids) aged about 12-14 come in after school and mess about - jumping on equipment, just sitting on it and not using it, left totally unsupervised and having little meetings at the top on the mats.

We saw two of them hanging like monkeys on one of the pieces of equipment and the staff really dont give a stuff.

A lot of members complain about this - because they block others from using.

If they come in and properly use the equipment we wouldnt have a problem, but they are a pain.

I have hardened up a bit now and if they are messing on something I want I tell them to shift. Someone said they come in and only have to pay £2 - (if I was being cynical I would say some parents use it as an after school club) .....

Thanks for the info, when my membership runs out at Beaconside I'll be looking around to see if there's a better deal, there might not be, because I'm picky about what I want from the gym haha.

small update -

been to my induction and it was a very relaxed gym which you'd expect on a Sunday morning so no queuing whatsoever for machines.

2nd visit, and perhaps 'prime time', 6 (a Tuesday) and again a good atmosphere, didn't really have to keep a beady eye on particular machines as there wasn't a huge amount of people in, so all in all i'd recommend Beaconside ...though not a particularly huge recommendation as i'd like to keep up the nonqueuing for equipment!

...so, onwards and upwards, ummm.

Update on mine.......haven't been again since Friday! :D :D :D

Good job I joined on a PAYG rather than be tempted by the monthly offer!

Will get back on it again next week, after the half term hols..................:D

I made inquiries at Beaconside and may go along there as well. Slightly less per session than Riverside and don't have to pay extra for the initial induction (Just pay the same price as the session and stay on after the induction).

Riverside suits me better for walking down to it in the week and Beaconside would be better at weekends when I've got use of the car (Is the Beaconside Carpark still free to park?)

I was in on tuesday around 8 and the machines were still pretty quiet, the free weight floor was really full though, had to fight a little to get what I needed. Glad you're enjoying it.

Thread back from the dead, hashtag.

Few changes at the gym, machines being moved, things being added for the bulk heads, it's all starting to look a little too blokey gym now, imo.

Anyone else go?

My membership's up in December and thinking of trekking that little be further to Riverside.

A few posts under my belt
I've been thinking about joining. Might pop in next week and have a look.
