Bins

A certain well-known local character - with a propensity for climbing trees - once had a brick thrown through his back door window and so he very carefully wrapped the debris in cardboard and taped it securely. At the time he was only putting his bin out once every couple of months, as he didn't produce much waste. When the bin lorry arrived rather than expose the operatives to any risk, he carried the 'parcel' out into the road and was about to throw it into the lorry when he was told 'We cannot take anything that is not contained within the wheeled bin, Sir'.

It's your fault now, I hadn't actually spotted that one. I'm off to Google it now. Probably find some really dirty stuff..

A couple of years back i suggested to my son-in-laws binman that as there wasn't much garden waste this time of year they introduce a policy that general household waste should be accepted from the brown bin as well as the green one for the 1st collection in january. He remarked it was a brilliant idea as it would be simple to carry out and the punters would be happy..........
Basil it looks like they they were reading your suggestions on the forum if you look at councils bin news below, which i think it might be helpful to share:

Subject: Update: Domestic Refuse Collection

Please see below message currently on the Council's website regarding disruption to Refuse Collection Service.

Emergency News
Last update Tuesday 12 January 2010 11.38am
Bin collection update
The adverse weather has meant some households will not have had their bins emptied on their scheduled collection day. Biffa are currently carrying out the scheduled service today but there may be a number of properties they may not be able to get to due to the icy conditions - primarily side streets and untreated roads. If you have not had your bin emptied by 5pm on the scheduled day then you will not have a collection until your next scheduled date.
Extra bin collections
Properties that have missed their green bin collection due to the conditions may temporarily use their empty brown bin as a second rubbish bin. This must only be placed alongside the green bin on the next scheduled green bin collection day between 18 January 2010 and 29 January 2010 as highlighted on the previously issued calendar. Please do not put out your brown bin containing household waste with your blue bin as this will not be collected due to the potential mixing of waste within the recycling collection vehicle.
Biffa also will collect side waste if bagged and left by the side of the appropriate bin. Rubbish should be left by the green refuse bin and recycling by the blue bin on the next appropriate collection date. But if possible could all glass items be placed in the blue recycling bin. If not we would ask residents to take care when putting glass in to bags.
We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused our residents.
Regards

I'm guessing no collections for the majority today then, if they daren't stray off the main roads.

I saw at least one van today, on the Stone road. After that I was too busy watching car crashes and falling over (in no particular order).

I passed them on Marston Road at ten past 8, so fingers crossed. I also saw the small lorry on John Amery Drive, which normally goes out if they've forgotten to collect; so there's no reason why they can't send that down the side streets.

Its not the green bin that's the problem for me, could go 2 months or more without having that emptied... the blue bin is the problem, bloody recycling too much and its rammed.

Seems to be the problem for most of my street too.

Same here on that one, I only put my green bin out about every 3rd or 4th collection but the blue bin is brimming.
I am managing a daily 90 mile round trip to work and back with no real problems so would expect a professional driver to cope OK.

Same here, despite having 3 adults that cook seperately in our place the green bin rarely fills. I can fill a blue bin on my own though!

The green bins down our road on Wildwood weren't emptied on Monday ,even though the van collecting charity bags managed to get down quite easily at 9am !

I've left mine up the end of the drive with all the others, just in case and just keeping adding to it.Just hoping that no-one else decides to fill my half empty bin with their rubbish now!!!
