Big ditto on that mate... £8 a month line rental for something I don't even want or use.... at least its not going into BT's pocket any more.

Where are BTs cabinets? I thought the ones at the side of the road were all for virgin!
There are still BT cabinets about. They tend to be rather more substantial cast items than the bent sheet Virgin ones. The box with 34 on it here is a BT box.

Not being Pedantic, ok maybe just a little. BT Infinity is just BT retails offering for you to connect on Fibre to the Cabinet there are other providers offering it. They have played a nice marketing trick to make you think you can only get it from "BT Infinty".

BT Openreach do all the cabling, BT Wholesale sell the product to the likes of BT Infinity, Aquiss Broadband and Plus.net etc.

United 57- When you say most of the kit is in, does that include laying the fibre to the cabinet? I'd have thought that was a long time consuming job?
Most if not all of BTs exchanges have fibre in to them connecting up the country.

The last mile is the issue. Copper and aluminium.

BT kit is in exchanges.

Virgin are the boxes by the side of the street. They are for cable TV and telephone. They should have fibre to them.

The substantial BT ones tend to be junction boxes. Bomb proof

Should we really be talking about Exchanges because they are still subject to The Official Secrets Act 1911.?

Competition (to Virgin) is good, it's just a shame it is from BT who should be investigated for monopolistic practices.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but ...

I noticed last Friday that at the end of Silkmore Crescent they are placing a new green BT box near the existing one, and that this morning a BT Openreach van turned up with a large cable spool in tow.
Granted it could just be repair work on the existing copper network but with 1.4 meg broadband at the moment I can but hope that Stafford is progressing towards the fibre optic upgrade due in March 2012 :)

Funny you should bring this up, I've just searched for this thread to make a similar update.

I noticed the other day that BT were doing works on Radford bank, three large works vans one with a long spool of cable. The cable being the fire optic kind. Then, yesterday I saw a hole had been dug in the ground next to an existing cabinet on Baswich lane- plastic ducting poking out ready for the power and fibre for the upgraded force box. Finally, tonight on by the Esso petrol station on Weston Road I saw workmen fitting cabling to a new cabinet, the kind clearly used for BT Infinity.

I'm glad they've started making progress, I'm lucky if my broadband hits 1meg so this will be welcome. March 2012 can't come soon enough!

PaH. They clearly chose to wait until after we switched to Virgin Media to get better connection speeds! The difference is amazing...

Had a talk with a BT engineer with his head in the new cabinet on Silkmore Lane yesterday. He confirmed the new cabinets were the first stage of the fibre optic roll out, but there is still the main cabling and the creation of the fibre spine it all hangs off to do.

I asked if we were still on for a March release, and he said that all though the work could be done in 3-4 months a more reasonable estimate would be 6 given how much area Stafford covers and any problems that might be encountered.

So it might not be here as fast as we want but it's definately on it's way :)

Bodman, I suspect a lot of money will be thrown at it near to March to ensure completion on time- especially with Autumn Statement mentioning broadband fibre provision and a budget for it. At least we're seeing progress.

John, the most frustrating part of the project is that there is no information about coverage provided! I've spent a couple of hours searching but can't find much out at all.
