Bus War in Stafford.

A few posts under my belt
It would seem Stafford now has another Bus War, Select Bus have started to do routes in Stafford, the introduction of the number 8 from Moss Pit to Parkside and the Number 9 from Highfields to Town Centre via Wolverhampton Road, however Arriva have hit back by introducing lower bus fares and doing another Number 8 and a number 9B via Wolverhampton Road to shove Select Buses out of Stafford, They are also doing route 74 Stafford to Wolverhampton.

My Dad was telling me all about this, apparently he has 8 buses to choose from each hour now. From what I understand Arriva took the routes off as they were unprofitable, so Select took them up. They also took on a lot of the rural services too. Seems to me Arriva are now trying to put Select out of business, at which point they'll pull the routes again.

Since the change in routes the Arriva service is dreadful -- the buses are never on time that's if they turn up at all. I waited for over 40 mins just to go up to Radford bank from the Sun pub one eve last week, and waited for over an hour for a cannock bus going up the wolverhampton road - the sign said 'due' on the electronic time table in the stop and then the sign flashed up the one an hour later and the one that was due never appeared. If the competition is a better service then it’s just what Stafford needs

I travel on the buses daily and have to catch the first choice one on a thursday - i'm always stressing that i'll miss it because the Arriva one is late. First choice are always on time - so if they can keep to a time table to hanley and back why cant arriva manage to keep to one around stafford.

This happened years ago, County Bus, operating out of the Yarnfield area, used to be an awful lot cheaper than Arriva. Eventually Arrive bought them out and closed them down, according to a driver at the time.

During the initial deregulation fiasco, years ago, I remember standing by the Grapes as seven buses went past with a total of four passengers.....

I noticed a whole load of new buses doing routes I'd never heard of recently but am at a loss how to find out about them to enable me to use them!! Anyone know? For example I saw a bus saying Hanley going up the Eccleshall Road which I assume means it's using the motorway so could shave days off the normal 101/10 PMT journey but I have no idea how to confirm this?

Edit, I just found this page which might help people in my position!!

Arriva's phone app is awful. It lies. I waited nearly an hour for a 9 the other week and the app said they had all run on time. The 8 is worse. They only seem to run on a friday afternoon despite the timetable. Fair play to Select for trying to carve a share out.

The fortnightly stagecoach from Woodseaves to Stafford only charges 3 groats and a go on me goat.

Massive cuffy to the driver of the 13:51 No 8 Arriva bus who drove straight past the bus stop at The Green, by TK Maxx, thereby leaving us standing at the stop. What the hell is the matter with bus drivers? There livlihoods depend on passengers yet they see fit to leave passengers who were clearly visible at the bus stop as they drive merrily past. Last time I try and use an Arriva bus. I'd rather walk and save the money, which, given their outrageous prices won't be hard :(

Interesting fact: It's cheaper to get to Nuneaton and back for 1 adult and 1 child on the train with a family railcard than it is to get to town and back from the Common :( Arriva, robbing bast*ards.

Select buses meant to be doing Wildwood/Walton from Mon 10th 0ct, advertised at a bus stop, same as the old Arriva 2 used to do, wildwood, brean road, Walton

seems useless times though, looks like only 10am to 3pm, not a lot of use that!
