Depending on the quantities involved and your circumstances, it can be beneficial, i.e. no commission, to trade reciprocally with somebody in the opposite position or to take goods to the value with you, if you can be assured of a sale. I usually take various items on order and haven't actually had to buy currency for many years. Be wary of carrying too much cash, of course. There are the obvious risks and there are also the sniffer dogs and having to come up with a good story. Smallish quantities are OK, though, and there is the joy of doing some suit out of his 'hard-earned' rake-off...
