Hi All

Need advice, have managed to drop the iron onto my nice carpet burn a nice hole in my carpet in the middle of the room...

I have some carpet offcuts in the same pattern, does anyone know how to patch this up without it being too obvious?

You should have taken Lucy's advice and placed cats on the ironing board to avoid inadvertant use.

Cut out a piece from the off cuts that is a little bigger than the knackered bit, avoid straight lines that are not part of any pattern that it might have. If there is a pattern than make sure the bit you cut out is the right orientation. If you have enough spare then practice fitting it into a similar shaped hole that you have cut in another spare piece. When you are confident cut a piece ( slightly too small ) from the real carpet and carefully trim to suit the patch.

Or just put a settee or rug over it.

There is a reasonably sane carpet fitter about called Mark who might be interested in doing it for a few bob. Try him, he can only say 'No' or he might put you on to someone else. Last time I saw him his mobile was 07862 742712

I should, of course, have mentioned that you might need to attach the new patch to the old carpet, but this chap seems to have remembered that. If you don't, then your vaccuum cleaner, be it a Dyson or a Henry, might suck it off repeatedly. Our Hispanic friend doesn't seem concerned about using straight lines, and he's clearly done it far more often that I have.

i would contact the insurance people
ding ding! correct answer..

insurance companies seem to have successfully implanted this thought in our minds that we should do absolutely everything within our power to avoid contacting them, and they are the absolute last people we should turn to when something gets damaged, even though we pay them a fortune for just this kind of eventuality!

my dad recently managed to drop a pot of gloss paint in the master bedroom, and was trying to come up with all kinds of ways to undo the resulting damage.. new wardrobes, carpet cleaners, etc. were all considered.. my sister had to practically force him to phone the insurance company..

am i right in thinking that most contents insurance doesn't have a "no claims discount" arrangement, such as we have with car insurance? if there is no negative impact of making a claim, then bloody well make one! insurance companies make millions off us, because we all pay for it and then are scared to use it when we need it lol..

yep, that's what it's there for.. unless, of course, you're not covered for accidental damage.. which i'm sure you will be..

i'm pretty sure that you can claim up to 3 times a year without incurring any penalty with most insurers (i.e. it won't affect your premium next year) but you might want to check that..

edit: although you might want to check what your excess is.. i've never bought a carpet, so i don't know how much it would cost to replace the whole thing and depending on your excess it may not be worth it..

So what does it cover? Just fire and theft kinda thing? Prob worth finding when your cover ends, and switching to a better provider.
