Build a tunnel !! Cos...i guarantee the old railway bridge would go....and you know...thats a shame that is ! And as for my four routes ......ambition, ambition, ambition and ambition.....There's no achievement i'm afraid....replaced by a pedestrian zone, a wind turbine and a no entry sign !!

While there about it why not improve the 'bypass' route from blackheath lane thru' to the A34 at weeping x ?.........
The Eastern By-Pass was commenced in 1935 with the construction of Beaconside from Weston Road to Sandon Road. This was extended in 1975 from Sandon Road to Redhill. There was a short extention added to the new Fire Station around 2000ish and so it seems likely to take about another 150 years to complete. Hope this helps.
That was discussed at length here, although my pics are no longer live. I think its safe to say those who live on Baswich Lane would fight any attempt t widen that road, despite it being the most logical solution.

Does anyone on the forum live in any of the aforementioned Castle View flats either as owner occupier of as a tennant?

Would the bypass be any worse than the railway line that is within spitting distance? Could never understand why anyone would buy a place that close to the train line... madness.

I know a couple of people who live there so will ask what they think. Neither of them own their flat.

Well no, but it's not as if they're getting rid of the railway to make way for the bypass is it. They're gonna have both to contend with!

No, I see what you are saying... problem is they already ditched the motorway widening idea, so now they are going to use "hard shoulder running" instead so then adding an extra lane as you suggest either requires widening (which has already been ditched) or use the hard shoulder for that which puts them back to square one requireing the widening again?!?! :/
Preparations are ongoing on the M6 for hard shoulder running, as far down as junction 5 and as far up as junction 16. See here

As you come over the Newport Rd bridge out of town there is a wide piece of undeveloped land, seems this was designated about 50yrs ago for a link to the W'ton road, look out Brunswick Terrace!!........

Does any company still occupy the old GEC Castle Works site? I know Landon Engineering used to be there, do they still exist?

Landon Engineering are still there...
Much of that land between castlefields and castletown has been up for sale with St Modwen for over 20 years. However, the word is that theres serious contamination and possibly ordnance in there amongst other things, hence lack of development.

Has anyone studied the plans closely...

The text for the yellow option states:

Yellow: the Castlefelds Link Road/Chell Road Diversion Protected
Route was originally set aside in plans over 20 years ago. Since then
new developments have changed the landscape. It would mean
knocking houses down. It would be far more expensive.

I'm trying to figure out which houses it would require to be knocked down?!?! Comparing their map to google earth I can't see any so hopefully someone from the other side of the tracks might know?

Also am I being sceptical here or does anyone else read the leaflet and get the impression that the council are already heavily biased in favour of their "preferred route"... or is that acceptable if it is the "better option"?

Assuming that they wish to divert traffic away from the town centre and the aim being to connect the A518 to the A34, would it not be cheaper to bung junction '14 B' on the intersection of the A518 and the M6 and perhaps build an extra lane between '14 B' and 15?
The M6 is under the control of the Highways Agency - generally, they are against "local" traffic on their roads and can't see them agreeing to a new M6 junction in a million years. As far as motorways go there is a certain amount of sense in prioritising longer distance traffic. Stafford is quite well off with 2 M6 junctions - a lot of places of similar size wouldn't get two motorway junctions.

It was known as"The Stafford Bypass†linking the A449 to the A34 when it originally opened in 1962, constructed to relieve traffic on the A34.

That's surely why there's two junctions for such a little place. If they'd built the M6 in one go we would surely have had just one junction - on the Newport Road, perhaps - and what fun that would be now...
