We've two house cats one of which has 'escaped' twice, both times returning at around 9.30 pm. The first time he'd been out all day from about 9.00 ish. It had bucketed it down with rain for most of the day and he was bone dry. Reckon he'd been curled up in front of someone's fire. The other one we've caught with her head out of the window (we do occasionally forget) a couple of times but seemed to be just having a sniff and not looking as though she was about to do a runner.

Parents used to have two Siamese. Me mother sometimes had one of them out on a lead (though they did also go out unsupervised) whilst gardening. She was out of view behind hedge in garden but cat was visible to passers by. A woman came past with a dog which stopped to which woman said "now come away, you know what that cat did to you last time"....

* cat-beast update *

The now outdoors cat is loving it and, as far as one can tell, living it large. One can only assume that the, so far, lack of any more salubrious options keeps the beast homeward bound.

It has been possible, up to now, to drag the beast in when the house occupants will be out - but i fear that the time approacheth when there will be no one to let the fecker in when he is out, coz we is all also out 'n' about.

I had a close call this very morn. I was getting very close to needing to leave and the beast decided to approach another cat that lives down the road. A kerfuffle ensued, the upshot of which being that the cat-beast ran up a tree - a wise move on his part, i thought, as the other cat is a bit of a fat fecker and stood little chance of following him - from which i thought i needed to coax the beast down.

Time was beginning to become more and more of the old essence in this endeavour, which turned my thoughts toward what i might have to do if i eventually left the beast to his fate and saddled up and got out of there. What do you do when you leave the beasts to themselves? I thought earlier of perhaps erecting some kind of shelter in the garden that could be used in extremis - is that a good/bad/pointless idea? Is there any point in leaving some food out if you have to leave them?

What do you do?

- Coda - As it happens, this morning i was 'on the scene' when the beast ran up the tree so was able to coax the beast down - he lost his footing and ended up hanging from his front feet about nine foot off the ground. I could just about reach him on my tippy-toes so plucked him from the branch and took him home.

The serendipitous result of which being that it reminded me of a very beautiful song that i haven't listened to for ages - If I Fall. :)

Cat flap?

I've - sort of - been put off this idea by a colleague of mine who had a 'stray 'n' spray' sort of scenario before ditching theirs.

If i were to put one in, it could only feasibly be put in the front door - which leads to a small hallway and either -

i) nowhere else, if the door onwards were closed, or
ii) the rest of the house if it weren't.

It's certainly worth thinking about. Any thoughts from those that have/haven't installed such a device as to why they have/haven't?

I've never had 1 put in mainly, because I know we'd get all the other cats from roundabouts in too. Eldest has woken up before to find a strange cat sat on his window ledge, I don't need someone elses cat coming in and 'marking', this house smells bad enough with the 3 we have.

Aye there's the rub and all that.

There be many catz round these partz - wotz to stop them a cummin' in too as well?

So far i seem to have been given more reasons why i shouldn't flap than why i should - are there any yay sayers to negate the nay sayers?

Our cat flap is in the backdoor, we have had other visitors but only a couple of times in the 18yrs its been fitted, our cats usually scare them off.
A Fox once stuck its head through it & scared the life out of me (I'm not selling it very well am I?)
Having a catflap means they can get back in the house if they are scared or in danger or the weather is bad...
There are magnetic catflaps which supposedly only let your cat in.

There are quite a few out there that by means of either a magnetic tag or chip reader only let your cat in. You can get ones suitable for any door even glass ones :)
