Censorship-R we taking ourselves too seriously or not seriously enuff?

There are rules you agree to when signing up. These rules state what you can and cannot do, and by visiting a forum you agree to abide by them. In much the same way as giving abuse to a random in the street is wrong, so is abusing people online. Isn't a bar saying no trainers a form of censorship? And isn't that accepted?

The problem is, the admin IS RESPONSIBLE for removing any defamatory posts etc. Also, to keep a sense of community, you need to prune those that are detrimental to it. I visit a number of forums, and the consensus is always the same. If you don't like the rules, find a forum that has rules you do like. If you can't find one, take a long hard look at yourself and ask why.

You may have noticed the nature of the poll 'tek-monkey'.

The choices did not comprise of;

No.

No.

and...

No.

What tek-monkey said. Regardless of 'the nature of the poll', the question raised issues which tm addressed in his post. Forums with no mods or rules rapidly degenerate into a 'who can shout the loudest?' competition.

Do I get the impression you've had a post modded or deleted recently?

OK. Yes it is, if the mod/admin believes they should be. I voted for option one by the way, in case that wasn't obvious. Happy now?

wasn't the post in question moved to a more appropriate place? seeing at it was the theme of the actual post, surely there should be some satisfaction and gratification that your, kinmont, 'jest' / gripe was observed and acted upon by the power that is.

please correct me if am not quite on the ball with whats happening here..................

edit: forumite banter is always fun, baby

Good thread, Kinmont. I'm interested to hear peoples' views regarding this. It's very rare that I ever edit/delete posts - in general you lot are very good at policing yourselves (as I have said before). In fact, I honestly can't remember the last time that I edited someone's post as a result of it being inflammatory!

Should The Forum be a free for all, where anything goes? Or are you lot happy in the knowledge that I will wield my almighty power with gay abandon, should the need arise?

Not at all. As jchiltz has mentioned, I moved one of his posts (along with a few others) to the appropriate forum, but I certainly didn't edit or delete anything!

Am I the only one that has been banned by IP..... I'm such a Stafford Forum rebel :)
That's probably not something you want to boast about. Clearly, you've had a change of perspective since the ban, as I think everyone (myself included) enjoys your posts and musical musings now. Which I suppose demonstrates that the might of the Ban Hammer does work after all ;)

Off the top of my head, I would vote for a completely free no-censorship forum and an ability to not read certain people's posts if I think they don't have anything of value to say.
That's why I still use Usenet. (Am I the only one? :) )

Of the given choices, I voted for one, two.

Not sure what is meant by Forumite banter!?!?! But I think you need to be careful you don't offend. We are all human after all!! Accepting any kind of Forumite banter is great for those that mean no harm by it but it opensup oppurtunities to closet facist or those in denial!!

i suppose it depends on what you want from a forum.. there are many forums (fora?) that i read that operate on a "do as you please" basis.. obviously, this can lead to incredibly abusive/puerile/irrelevant posts, but the nature of said fora (lol) means that that sort of behaviour is expected..

i would imagine that this place is designed to be accessible to people of all ages, and so i guess it would need some form of moderation to keep the more childish/unruly elements at bay..

I personally believe that a right to censorship has to exist, if only to keep this fine Forum from ever getting shut down due to a threat of libel. Some proper idiots have posted some extremely inflammatory remarks in the past and Admin has been right to delete them. Keep up the good work Almighty Admin!
