Hello all.

I know quite a few on here are chicken owners and I'm currently chicken-sitting for my brother. I noticed one of the chickens had bubbles on her eye yesterday and a quick google leads to me thinking it might be a respiratory infection. The brother has advised me to not take her to a vet, just get some terramycin or duramycin (antibiotics) from a chicken food shop... However I don't know of any in Stafford...

Can anyone advise where I can get some from? if not a shop can anyone recommend a chicken-friendly vets?

I so badly don't want to kill of his flock!!

Wynnstay Stores up on Beaconside? They seem pretty reliable for your smallholding needs....

WMR would probably be the man to ask though...

You might find it difficult to obtain either of those drugs without visiting a vet.

I have used Terramycin a couple of times in the past, with very good results but each time I got it from the vet and from memory, I think it was licensed for pigeons not poultry.

Countrywide Stores in Newport have a pharmacy counter where they can sell things that can't be retailed over the counter. I'm going there later and would have offered to get some and bring it in to Stafford with me tomorrow but I have just phoned them and they don't sell antibiotics.

If you do get hold of some, be very careful about the withdrawal period for the eggs. You normally dissolve medicine in the drinking water so it is useful if you can isolate the sick bird so you can give her measured amounts of water and medicine. It also means you know which eggs are hers. Check the stated withdrawal period and I would always double that, just to be on the safe side.
