Corporation Street Bowling Greens in Stafford to close?

I read in the newspaper that the Corporation Street bowling greens were being dug up for more housing. Those bowling greens were well used and there were toilet facilities there as well. I cannot understand why the bowlers are allowing these changes to happen. Any bowlers out there???

Almost the first work that was done when Lotus was sold for housing was to use a JCB to dig a trench through the middle of the bowling green...

Society seems to frown on people who stand up for themselves nowadays, you are supposed to bend over and take it all like a good little citizen. On the bright side you can't afford to retire, so the bowling green wont be as needed.

Hi 70plus,

When Councillor Frank James, a regular bowler himself, approached the issue in the Council meeting with the Cabinet Member for Leisure his answer was, if you'll allow me to paraphrase, that "the closure of Corporation Street Bowling Green was because of improved facilities on Riverway, with 2 bowling greens on there and that he'd had regular discussion with bowlers from the borough".

After speaking with the Head of Leisure and Culture at the Borough Council I can confirm that there is no planning application on the site nor is there any intention to develop on there. It is my understanding that the future use of the space will be considered by the Council as they undertake a review of all open spaces in the Borough.

Some years ago, when I knew people who lived in the nearby old-folks flats, I remember there being regular problems with parking during the bowling season - I wonder if this might be part of the reason for closing the green?

As with the Littleworth Tennis Courts -

I just wanted to give a brief update: my colleagues and I have requested a meeting with the Head of Service to talk about the issues raised and we expect that meeting to take place next week. Once we have more details I'll come back to update the Forum.

Apologies for the length of time it has taken to come back to the forum:

My colleagues and I have continued to press on this issue. We have undertaken formal consultation with the residents of Littleworth ward over the future of the two sites. During January and February we distributed consultation leaflets throughout the households of the ward and we received 236 responses within the deadline. The following answers were given:

Littleworth Consultation Results

Following the consultation, we will be proposing to Cabinet to go forward with plans as indicated by the residents. With specific regard to Greenway Tennis courts, we will be conducting further consultation with local residents to ensure that the right choice is made on behalf of the people who live around the area.
