Costa in town moving?

That's what I heard today, into the old pelo attached to the guild hall. Would be a good move I think, nice views, needs to be a service sector establishment, guild hall desperately needs a good brand...

Anyone else heard this?

Only twice in my whole life have I felt the urge to write in appreciation of customer service, and one of those times was to laud the Portuguese chap in the Costa outlet at Watford Gap services.

I'm sorry I might be being really thick but I can't think where you mean? Where is the "Old pelo attached to the Guildhall"?

On your left as you go up the steps into St Mary's churchyard, having exited the Guildhall by the the doors near HMV.

Ahhhh, I'm with you now!
Yeah it would be a worry that a Costa located there would take business away from The Grove and maybe the Soup Kitchen. The Guildhall really does need some urgent attention, looking very shabby in places.
On a related "development rumour" matter I heard recently that Chambers is set to re-open....anyone else heard this?

Yep...apparently it's to do with Lisa who owns Fatso's and also has The Bird In Hand.

Excellent news. Me and Mrs FDR had some really good meals in Chambers (before it started going downhill) really like the place and will be glad to see it back up and running. We all must make sure that we go there and support it!

Strange decision in my opinion , why would you want to leave the high street to somewhere that could be considered out of the way. The same could be said about Dunhelms moving from the Queens retail park up to by Homebase, as there can't be very much passing footfall compared to their previous position

I'm guessing the rates are a lot lower, and the much nicer view will entice customers. I'm not convinced though, I'm sure people buy overpriced coffees specifically so they can sit in the massive windows and be seen drinking them. The view to them is the inside, as it were, and less passing people means less chance to be seen.

A tea room yes, not a chain coffee shop.

So, they'ld be better moving into the old Connexions place, that's a real fish-bowl location..?

Of course we are working on the assumption that Costa are moving and not merely just opening up ANOTHER coffee shop in the town. I know of other towns that have multiple Costas or multiple Starbucks, indeed we already have two Costas if you include the one down on Queens Retail Park - they may just be opening another one. I also find it hard to believe that they would want to swap a prime High Street location for one tucked out of the way - shop rents are less of a concern to a chain like Costa that even through the recession is doing pretty well and regularly posting healthy profits.

It is always good to see vacant premises brought back into use, just a shame when it has to be faceless coffee chains, pound shops, mobile phone shops, charity shops etc all the time

There was also another Starbucks in Sainsbury's, wasn't there? Maybe there still is.
It's now Sainsburys Cafe, Mr FDR is right, they closed down the Starbucks one when the High Street 1 were opened and had a refurb of Sainsburys.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
The Starbucks in Sainsburys did indeed close when the one in the town centre opened. It is now J's Café run by Sainsburys themselves.

I heard a rumour that Costa would be taking over the café in Tesco. After all, Costa are already in Tesco Express in Rising Brook service station.
