Crap Towns Returns

To say Stafford has a rubbish nightlife is utter nonsense. If you're expecting Stafford to be like a big city, then you're being foolish.

The live music that takes place every week at pubs like The Grapes, Rose & Crown, Bear & Pheasant, Joxer Brady's, the national and internationally renowned DJ's that Couture and The Post House have put on (including Hed Kandi and Gatecrasher DJ's) is brilliant for a small town.

The live stand-up comedy available in Stafford is, frankly, unrivaled by nearby cities like Stoke and Wolves.

On top of that, The Gatehouse Theatre attracts huge TV stars of comedy, and is committed to local drama groups. The yearly Festivals at the Castle.

It might not be what YOU want to do, but Stafford has a lot of entertainment and culture going on for anybody who wants to leave their sofa or bar stool.

The post house is pretty good and the swan when they have the band nights on but couture is full of pikey Chav kids and there is always trouble, the rest of the pubs you mentioned are just not my cup of tea they all could do with a refurb

I wunna wonna live in certain parts of Walsall or Sandwell or Hull but if you spend a lot of your time visiting other parts of the country or globe there is usually a big let down when it comes to the service industry sector and in particular catering when back in town. There are however some good exceptions, which make visiting other establishments all the more frustrating . You can train someone all you like but removing the Stafford dourness gene involves time invested elsewhere.

It all depends on what you want really doesn't it. From my perspective Stafford has decent schools and is a safe place for kids to grow up, play out etc and has loads of after school activities and clubs (so long as you pay). It's also really well connected by train; Liverpool, Manchester, Birmigham and even London all within 1.25 hours, as are 4 international Airports. We have a theatre, a cinema, V fest isn't too far, and Cannock Chase and Doxey Marshes are on our doorstep. I like living here.

If shopping or the leisure centre/sports provision were the determining factors then I agree , Stafford is crap!

What is it with the lack of restaurants? Surely there's a gap in the market or do stafford folk not like eating out? The vast majority of people who I know in stafford weren't born here but seem to like the place. I've moved from stockport and Stafford is definetly a nicer place to live.

A lot of "a good night out" is to do with the company you keep. Personally I think that if youhae crap company you can have a crap night in any town or city. Some of it can also be about YOU fitting in rather than wanting everything on a plate. Many Stafford people want something for nothing and it doesn't surprise me that people agree with these sensationalists who write something controversial to sell a few books.

To be fair nightlife in Stafford has improved over the last couple of years with The Post House, The Rose and Crown and The Sun opening/refurbished with also The Yard and The Swan Hotel, and whenever we've been up town at the weekend whilst it hasn't been busy it has been an improvement on say about 3 years ago when the town was dead,
I think we recall when Stafford was really busy at night about 10 years ago with the likes of Yates's, Sacromento's, Firkin etc, but Stafford isn't on it's own to see a big drop in trade due to the recession/smoking ban/change in lifestyles etc, as by all accounts Wolverhampton's nightlife isn't a patch on what it was and when we popped over to Lichfield on a Friday night last year it was like a ghost town.

I think to be fair the book doesn't take itself very seriously and is merely marketed as a bit of fun so I wouldn't get too wound up about it. Also be virtue of the fact that the title is now in its second or third version, on that basis every town in Britain will at some point appear in there as a "crap town"

Whether a town is crap or not is highly subjective and so the publication team are merely expressing their opinion or the opinions of a tiny sample of people surveyed.
For my two penneth I like Stafford, of course it has some things that I would like to see changed or done differently but thats life. On balance I enjoy living here and feel as though myself and my family are safe which is all that really matters.

What I truly can't understand is some who come on here and constantly slag Stafford off. If it is truly that bad then go and live somewhere else. I can't understand why anyone would stay in a place they find so awful? Perhaps the next edition of the crap towns book should look at "towns with small minded, moaning people" On that basis Stafford would quite likely be right up there

My only real criticism about Stafford is that there needs to be more variety when it comes to eating establishments. Every other restaurant in Stafford seems to be an Indian. Please would somebody from Wagamama, Nando's or Yo Sushi (or the the owner of Miso in Stoke) open up a restaurant here.

The pubs are good. The comedy nights are excellent value for money. There are numerous live music venues. Mrs King does the food shopping so I can't comment on standards of supermarkets (although Lidl do fantastic iced tea). Amazon deliver here with no additional charges. There are good road and rail links to Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. There is also a lot of countryside to be explored if you care to look for it. My neighbours are very friendly. I have met a number of forumites who are also very friendly. Staffordians will speak to you as long as you don't make sudden flailing movements or hooting and howling sounds.

Overall, Stafford is not such a bad place to live in my humble opinion.

Stafford on the whole is a nice place to live. I never understand the whinging about shops, we have retail parks coming our of our earholes with more shops on the way. Personally I've no desire to see any more retail expansion. Anything you can't buy in Stafford, Birmingham is little over 30 mins on the train (or dare I say it 40 mins in the motor on a good day), or there's the interweb. Transport-wise, we are on the West Coast Main Line and the M6 which provides far better transport links than most other towns of Stafford's size. Despite what people might think, Stafford doesn't have congestion on the scale that other places do either, and a lot of the busy traffic is caused by, erm, shops that we apparently don't have enough of....

Restaurants wise, I'd agree, Stafford isn't fantastic but there are some good places. I think those who just wish for more identikit chain restaurants perhaps ought to exercise a bit more imagination!!

As regards attitudes, obviously it is a generalisation to which there will be exceptions, but I do think there is an element of small/narrow mindedness about. It probably comes from having an agricultural hinterland..... It seems to me that a lot of Stafford lacks a sense of community too, but that is increasingly true of many other places as well.

Sorry to confuse you. There was a full stop between that sentence and Staffordians. Although three forumites that I have met were born here. I myself am an immigrant in Stafford.

I recommend Lanacane if your Stafford dourness genes are chafing.....or Swarfega.

I'm going to say it but I'm a little bit offended!

I love my town - and it most certainly isn't a shithole!

I'd rather like to know where the author of this book lives exactly!

Due to my location it is often more convenient to pop into stoke than to stafford.

Now THAT is crap!
