for anyone who attended the cupcake parlour on mill street here is an interesting piece of news on her blog.

for the record, i like kelly and her shop. i hear good things about it. i can empathise how difficult it is running a business with the demands of a family on your shoulders too, and i only have a 1 year old! i can't imagine having 5 children and one of them in a wheelchair while trying to start up a business. good luck to you kelly

I feel quite guilty for only ever going in there the once now and wish I had offered a little more support - although with everything else going on in her family life it seems inevitable that the closure would likely have still happened regardless of the financial reasons.

Very sad to see another local trader close their doors, but happy to hear that she is continuing her work from home. Kelly, the very best of luck for the future if you read this.

Such a shame!!!

If it is a viable business and if she still has time to back cakes from home, could she not have employed someone to run the shop on her behalf?

Like most small businesses, it doesn't necessarily pay to have a shop / overheads etc. I've thought of opening a shop a few times, but in all honesty it would probably finish me. Shop rents aren't cheap. In my case I'd have to do around 15 repairs per week just to overheads, then employ someone so that I can do callouts etc. I'd have double the workload and make no more - possibly less - than I do now.

As it stands my only overheads are mobile phone and car... things I'd still be paying to have even if I wasn't self employed.
