Decent plumber wanted

Currently I have this weird thing going on with my bath whereby if a small amount of water goes down the drain, everything is fine, but let a bath load out and first it seems to go down the plug very slow, and then it starts leaking though the ceiling below. I've had a plumber round today but after extensive tests he can't find any issue.

So, I still have water running through my ceiling when we let a bath out, but the leaking only start after about 1 min of the water going down the plug. Initially the water seems to go down quite quickly, but it gets slower and slower. I assume when it backs up is when it starts to leak, but plumber could find no evidence.

Any ideas or decent plumber recommendations welcome!

A lot of baths will have a waste arrangement like this...

..the plastic pipe that goes up to the overflow is often a bit flimsy, as it is expected that only has water in it when it flows out of the overflow, but when the plug is pulled, water can sometimes flow back up it to some level - if it's cracked, the water may then leak out.

You might be on to something here. The leak coincided with the twist thing that is where the overflow is and lifts the plug breaking (hope that makes sense). Since the plumber left the side off the bath I'll check out the overflow pipe when I next have a bath. Thanks :)

...and the plumber you had round couldn't think to check this?!

Keeping it really, I guess.

Well I was at work, but by all accounts he ran the water and nothing leaked. Like I said, it doesn't occur instantly, only after the water has been going down the plughole for a while, like it backs up somewhere. Had I been in, I would have had a bath run and demonstrated. never thought to explain to my teenager every single step of the 'plumber needs info' process!

To be honest it sounds to me like you have a blockage in the pipe as well as a dodgy overflow connection if its backing up from a bath waste unless the baths placed down stairs you may have a hair ball in the trap that's swelling up with the water or depending on how old the pipe work is it either needs a good cleaning out or replacing. Just a couple of things I've encountered over the years.

Yes sounds like a partially blocked waste pipe and a leak on the overflow pipework. If the panels off already take off the trap clean it ll out if needed and then you will need to clean out the waste pipework from the bath to wherever it terminates. Don't bother with cleaning fluids/acids do it manually with a flexible drain cleaning tool or even better take it all apart as much as possible, if its solvent weld pipework cut out sections and rejoin after with new couplers and weld glue. Then if the waste oveflow pipe looks ok take it off and refit aplying silicone where it pushes on to make it seal. They normally have o rings and just push on tight but often leak.

Actually just re read and you have a pop up bath waste so will need a new one anyway if its broken. will come as a complete unit so just replace it all.
