Thanks Tumbadora.
I have a friend who collects musical instruments, I'll point him at this thread.

I've been wanting to learn how to play these for ages, is it one of these things that takes ages to learn or is it easy to get going?

hmm.. well it can be as easy or complicated as you want but doing it right can be just as much practice as other instruments. Being able to keep a beat helps obviously! There are 3 basic notes Bass - Tone - Slap that are Low -Mid -High respectively and then variations on these. To get the notes to sound distinct from each other you change the weight of your stroke, hand position and position on the drum head.. after some practice the aim is to be able to put any note at any point in a rhythm, say 8 beats long. But if you just want to make a big noise or keep a beat with a guitar then it can be fun 2 keep it simple
