Not even going to get involved with the ridiculousness of towns with cathedrals known as cities :)
Clonfert has a cathedral, but they don't bother much about being a 'city', with a population that is barely into three figures.

They're happy with staying a village.

Well comparing town population stats a couple of the largest have over 200,000 ( I.e. reading about 220,000). Many have populations of over 150,000 plus.

So if about 220,000 is the biggest.

So cateogising small, middle and large ranges(thirds), with 220, 000 the top figure in the large range, then quite clearly Stafford with a population of around 65000 come under the small category as it falls within the max figure in the small range which would be a population of up to over 73000.

At the very best it could be categorised as a mid sized town.

distance wise it is tiny compared to alot of places, even more so when looking at the town centre on its own.

Not even going to get involved with the ridiculousness of towns with cathedrals known as cities :)

You are implying there is an even spread of town sizes from 0 to 220000, which I don't believe is the case. According to the very few places I looked we're in the top 10% on all.

It is not about spread, it is about and population.

Stafford isn't a big town far from it.

Not sure you understood. Your logic implied every town has an evenly spaced population between 0 and 220000, hence the thirds comment. My link shows population, and in particular how high up we are compared to other towns.

I also wouldn't trust that website as it has got Cannock as 60000 plus, that is the size of the district, the town is is about 35000.

In the 2011 census the population of Stafford was 68472. It's completely reasonable to assume that the population growth in the last 6 years has taken it over 73.000...............so it isn't a small town. Newport is a small town, Stone is a small town, Stafford is not.

I never stated that nor implied anything of even spread.

I implied putting population sizes into thirds say from the lowest populated town ( which of course would be more than 0) to the highest and what range using the 3 categories small medium and large could fall in, so one would have to break the populas range it into equal thirds for the stated number of 3 categories, hence the range :)

Of course one could add a whole range of categories from very small, small.....et but if so than the ranges would change. I laid out the maths on this on the basis of the simplest thought process of a statement of large and what comes with that...small and medium. Of course we could split 50/50 large and small and the town would still be in the small category :)

Now you are making stats up.

But we know Stafford`s populas has grown since the census but we do not to what exactly.

But as Stafford`s will have grown they will not be the only town in the country to see it. so most of the other- especially the `larger` towns will have population growth- therefore it is possible the range will have increase overall and Stafford would the be in that bottom third range. In fact it is reported Swindon has had significant growth.

That said, my point ( if you read my posts) was about claiming the town as large and I quite clearly state at best it would in the middle sized town range :)

Is Stafford large compared to Newport....yes, but in the overall context when it comes to populas, when compared to larger and or largest, then clearly it is not.

Not a very accurate way of doing statistics though, as the vast majority of towns would be in the small category. You could have a town that is in the top 10% population wise still appear in the lowest category, you need to take median values.

What is the matter with you? Thats statistic from the 2011 census, the official measure. How can I be making it up? You're an absolute joke on here, you really are. Any time someone provides a fact based argument against the tosh you serve up you mock it. Facts are facts, it's not my opinion, it's a provable thing, unlike any of the twaddle you spout.

What the f*ck have I started?
Some parts of a small / medium / large town (delete as appropriate) will be run down, some parts won't. Hopefully the regeneration started in the south end of the town centre will spread to the north.
Although I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

Stafford....large town lol :)
Stafford's not been a small town since the 50's
Large scale developments in the 50/60's allowing residents to move out of small town centre dwellings and into larger housing. (With Barhrooms & Gardens)
Further large scale developments in the 70's increased its size further.
Now even larger scale developments, so Stafford was once a Small town, but not anymore.
(It has hovever retained its small town roads and shops)

An outsiders perspective. My parents are visiting from the south east. They commented to my in laws last night (whilst sat in No 7 enjoying a Haka and a Mobasa gin) that where they live people are desperate to move away from the town centres; yet here they would want to live closer as the town itself has so much going on. So there you go - grass is always greener of course, but they love the place. The gin may have helped.
