He looks loads of fun. Good luck and keep us updated with pictures!

Will do!

I don't know if to change his name or not?

Is it the done thing?

Kane sounds a bit mean - and hes so soft!

(The other half argued that he may not respond to a new name - in which I called 'sausages' at the top of my voice and he came running - thus proving dogs are not name fussy....)

Maybe he thought you were in possession of some sausages?

Dad changed the name of one of his rescue dogs - but only slightly - from Zac to Mac (as sons best friend was called Zac)

Maybe you could change it to Zane......or Shane......or Flame........!

In fact, it might have been the rats posting it on Facebook, aimed at your new dog...

Thanks for the advice guys - yes I am going to go for an easy to keep breed - although I adore Alsatians I know they can be a real challenge!

Have seen this beautiful dog: http://www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/109457367/solid-black-german-shepherd-female.html
But I know something like a Labrador would be far easier

I don't know if I'm giving off some sort of 'vibe' but in the last week or so loads of people have said to me
'oh you'll be wanting to settle down and start a family soon'

Dear god people!! I could not think of anything worse! Everyone I meet tells me!

WMR that's my worry - I'll just think oh that dogs adorable and it turns out to be a nut!

Going this afternoon so will let you know how I get on!

You would love my Gsd i just wish there was maire inderstanding from others

We're also thinking of getting a dog. We
did visit a rescue dog which had come from Spain but decided that as it had only been in the country 3 days it was too soon to be sure what kind of temperament it probably had. I don't want to rush into it and still in two minds whether to get a rescue or to go to
a reputable breeder.

I have heard quite a few sad stories about rescue dogs brought in to the country who bolt very soon after their adoption - in one heartbreaking case, leaping from the car when the new family stopped at a motorway services.

I don’t know what it is about their previous lives that might cause this but if you do opt for one of these dogs, be really, really careful about keeping your garden secure and don’t let it off the lead until you’re absolutely certain about its recall.

Have you taken a look at Hillbrae?

They can tell you plenty about the dogs in their care and would take time to match you with the right animal.

I hope you find a dog who brings you as much joy, friendship and frustration as my spaniel.

Our Patt is very placid. However his son our daughters dog is bonkers !

S
Good grief, how did you manage that? You are the only one I've heard say that about their Patt. My girls are too young yet to know as most pups are plain bonkers in my experience lol. I'm on a Patterdale owners group and they all seem to remover the P and add a Tw to the name. I'm more polite, my girls can be right Pratterdales at times lol.
I'm smitten with them however.
We really wanted to rescue as we had before but we just couldn't afford the really high fees. They were more than I paid for both the girls in some cases and that was for dogs who were about 6ish. We couldn't bare the thought of the heartbreak after just a few short years of having them either. It's a great thing to do sadly we couldn't make it work for us.

I had my rescue dog from Spain aged 5 months. He's the best dog I've ever had. You don't have to rescue an adult with a less known temperament, there are loads of youngsters in rescue over there. I can provide contacts in Spain if you're interested (they arrange transport to the UK). Save a life and rescue a dog :)
