Educational songs

Over the last few days, Radio 1 have played to death the Kaiser Chiefs' Never Miss A Beat:

Kaiser Chiefs said:
What did you do today? I did nothing
What did you learn today? I learnt nothing
What did you learn at school? I didn't go
Why didn't you go to school? I don't know

It's cool to know nothing
It's cool to know nothing
which is of course an ideal sentiment to feed modern youth. </sarcasm>
Half-asleep on the bus this morning, I wondered about "educational" songs.
Monty Python - Oliver Cromwell and Iron Maiden - Alexander The Great sprung to mind.

So: What songs have we all learnt things from?

you realise that that is the point of the song? or at least, i assumed it was.. like when the daily mail jumped all over that nickleback tune for "glorifying" drugs and anorexia, when in fact that was the antithesis of their intention..

i guess it would be a double-irony if i thought they were being ironic when, in fact, they were just reinforcing apathy lol..

i love that song.. "SEP TEM BER!" lol

when i first discovered MC Hawking a few years ago i went through a stage of listening to A Brief History of Rhyme almost constantly.. there is actually a good deal of genuine knowledge in there, which i invariably picked up on.. and who says rap is damaging, bitch?? holla! :teef:

Its not like when I was a kid, when your musicians wrote songs about sthings such as immortality and time-dialation. And had really realy bad hair. (Brian May, if you didn't guess).
Perhaps thats why I'm very interested in science so much. And have really bad hair.

You mean '39 from A Night At The Opera?
That excuse has always worked for me. :)

This may not be 100% accurate, but the gist is in there and surely they must be given credit for their part in such a high-profile cultural exchange, possibly even being instrumental in hastening the end of the Cold War?

Iron Maiden have done several songs based on historical events and literature which you could class as educational i suppose. For example:-

The Trooper (about the charge of the light brigade)
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Samual Taylor Colridge poem)
Aces High (battle of britain)
Paschendale (WW1)
The Longest Day (D-Day landings)

I,ve probably missed some out but you get the gist (i hope)
