There were big shelters about where Maplin is now - they were used for archive storage after the potential bombs got bigger than they might cope with.

I had an office in the air raid shelter under Maplin for a couple of years, I had to pump it
out every time it rained heavily and it still had the hand pumped air cleaner inlet thingy in it,
last I saw of it it was full of old documents and drawings, I rather expect they are still there!

We had a stash of crimpers* there, so they didn't get found out for being out-of-calibration - I've got a set of them here.....



*These, ladies, I'm not going all frizzy.
