Escargot de Stafford

A friend of mine called me this evening asking if I could check something on the internet for him. I was out at the time, but he told me it was because he needed a recipe to cook snails. He's decided that as they eat his plants he will eat them, and as it's perfectly ok to eat garden snails then fair play to him. I advised him to cook them in butter, garlic, onion and a bit of olive oil, and haven't had any angry calls or messages back. Anyone else sampled the local Gastropoda?

If you're going to eat garden sails the thing to do is rid them of any foul pestilence that they may have picked up in poison soaked, shit ridden gardens. So what you need to do - so I saw on TV - is put them in an escape proof container with a couple of nice clean lettice leaves for about 3 days to clear out therre system and then you can cook them.

Radio 4 reported that there is now a big market demand for snails in France and the price was sky rocketing because the various eastern europen countries that were exporting them are finding more proffitable things to do. Since we arethe country witht eh most sanils per meter maybe there's a market opportunity for someone!

nettles are also supposed to be good for cleaning out snails.

i was considering doing something similar myself....unfortunately its mostly slugs in my yard.

does look like it could be a bit of effort though

you realise, after all this effort, you'd still be eating snails, right? :barf:
yes. they're really tasty.

bobby, have you ever eaten snails?

we used to have them quite a lot in france, and frogs legs too (much as i like them, i kind of put them in the same category as shark fin soup now- bit of a waste).

mum used to buy tins of snails from the supermarket on the way home so that we could carry on having them here- she still has a set of reusable shells for cooking them in too.

dont knock it till youve tried it. :)

Hmm...cos I wasn't on the internet and haven't cooked them myself I advised him to give them a good soak in water to get rid of the bits of soil etc....hadn't considered all the other nasty things. Anyway, he called me last night and seemed pretty happy with the results! His description was that they tasted like a mixture between chicken and mushroom. His girlfriend has vowed never to kiss him again...

Hi...i'm the resident snail-eater, and they were lovely! Ate 3 feet....tasted like a cross between chicken and mushroom, and am definitely going to eat some more. Goddamnit i'm gonna eat them ALL!! My strawberries are looking healthier already. Thanks for the suggestions.

(Note to self: get rid of nasty toxins)
