Fire Safety in the home. Advice sort (Gon2seed).

I could do with a few tips, with recent events in the news I'm getting a little paranoid that my home is not all that easy to escape from in the event of a fire.

I've looked at sites, this one included http://www.safelincs.co.uk/ . But before I go spending, hoped I could get some advice. My main concern is escape from upstairs so I want to get a ladder, do the Fire Service offer any 'we'll come round and look at your property' service?

Thanking you.

Phone 898102, its an answer phone. We used to answer all calls/messages to this line with visit, but now we have to conduct a questionnaire, as we target our resources at the most vulnerable in society. Most people still qualify for a visit so take advantage of this service.

This is open to anyone in Stafford.

I've PM'd you

I've got a really useful book thingy that I picked up at one of the many opportunities for students to pick up free stuff. It's got a checklist and everything! If you like I'll flog it to you for a couple of quid.

Trolling again Lunar Scorpian?

Oh for the innocent days when a Troll jumped out from under the rickety bridge and attempted to eat the Billy Goats Gruff!
;)

I usually bite quicker than a crocodile who only gets to eat once a year, then falls asleep when the Gnu's pass by, and has to wait till the following year for a square meal*, but on this occaision.......

* well a very roughly shaped meal, with knobbly bits, and some very nasty horns.

I was thinking about this the other night, but since I live in a third floor flat I reckon I (and others) are pretty much stuffed. Bit of a worry really especially with one little un at the mo and a misses to consider.

The only solution I can think of is buy one of those massive crash mats (you know the one in Lethal Weapon), attach it to the side of the building and in the event of a fire jump. Praying to god almighty that the little buggers nearby haven't lifted it and sold it for cheap cider and smack.

I may even use it if there isn't a fire too.

Not at all. I lived on the 14th floor of a block of 19 storey's.

You need to ensure that you have working smoke alarms in your property, these will give you enough time to vacate your property in the event of fire in your flat. You should know where your keys to your front door are, so that you can get them in an emergency, (not in a drawer in the kitchen, which is the most likely place in your flat to have a fire)

Should your neighbours have a fire, walls and floors of flats have to provide a minimum of 30 mins fire protection, and would in reality provide much more. You would be better staying put in your flat, close to an open window; the gorgeouse hunks/esses from Stafford Fire Station, that is crewed 24 hours a day, would come armed with a 13.5m ladder, and probably an arial platform, that reaches 33m. If you needed to be rescued from your flat, we have all the kit at Stafford to effect a rapid rescue, and in that respect you are lucky to be living in the 'Ford. People die and are seriously injured every year by panicking and leaping out of windows when it isn't necessary.
