Hi my vw needs to see a motor dr (possibly the starter motor but not sure oh and a fuse in a rear indicator keeps going grrrrrr). Anyway can anyone reccomend a local garage that is reliable and won't rip me off ? Want to try and give business to local services rather than the big wigs.

Cheers folks

The only advice that i could give is; when asking for advice, don't ask for advise.

I could advise you whilst giving this advice.

As if i would be such an arse.

Theres a place up the side of the co op on silkmore lane (follow the sign for the car wash) - its a family run garage, very nice service is very reasonable and i shall be taking mine for an oil change there

It would be shameless self promotion to simply recommend ourselves, so if you're looking for a garage try http://www.goodgaragescheme.co.uk/

You can see feedback from customers and check each garage offers the services you're after.

Must say, i'm very impressed at your embracing the forum AA Silencers.

Will definitely be bringing some work your way when I need something doing.

Actually, the heat shield on my '57 Fiesta needs replacing... is that the sort of thing you would take on or is it purely exhausts? Keep meaning to get the car up on ramps and take a look myself but the weather keeps putting a stop to that.

It's nice to embrace the forum, good to know there's civilisation out there (with the emphasis being on the 'civil').

Not just exhausts these days. I guess we should change the name really but it's been around so long it would be a shame to.

Half of the heatshields on your car aren't really necessary. The muppets who design cars mount aluminium heatshields with steel clips for some ungodly reason. Aluminium and steel react with each other, something to do with chemistry, which causes the thin aluminium heatshields to drop off 3 days after the warranty runs out. Sometimes it's a nice easy fix to secure them, other times we can just take them out. Most of the time we wouldn't even bother charging, it only takes 5 minutes.

I have my servicing and MOT's at Randles opposite Tesco. Me and my family have been taking our cars there for the last couple of years. I have a fiat Punto but they do whatever and recently cost me £99.99 for my service (oil and filter etc)

I paid £29.99 for my MOT in the summer.

Never had a problem and nice to deal with too. My partner is difficult to please after loads of issues with other garages but he's really happy with the work they do.

I second Hopton Garage, excellent service, really cheap servicing and MOT's and from what I know a good old family business, been going for years, so if you want to support someone local in business there you go!
