Getting in to running.

I am so unfit you wouldn't believe it.

I’m not quite twice the weight I should be but I’m closer to that than I am to my ideal B.M.I, and I’m running a half marathon.

I have a personal trainer booked at the gym this week to get me started and I have just done my 3rd ‘run’ everyone tells me it will get easier and I hope to God that’s true – well it can’t get much worse.

The Half marathon in Bristol is in September so I have 5 months to up my fitness levels. I want to do the Race for life at Trentham in June and Stafford showground in July as part of my training. Both of these are 5K runs and by the second one I want to be at a stage of pushing myself a little harder.

I need a 10k race or organised run towards the end of July or early August within 30 ish miles but can’t find much online any chance there are some runners about who can point me in the right direction?

The main problem with running for me outside is confidence, hate running in daylight don't like people seeing me !

And with my work being very early mornings, it's hard to do ! I was going to do the half-marathon until i got this bloody job and it went backwards, started comfort eating, getting out of control not running because i was just tired all the time and yeah didn't like to run in the day

Also do you have some proper running shoes?

Running is great though, I love it.. can think about things and feel good factor!

I live in the middle of nowhere so I could run for miles without seeing anyone - that's if I could run. I'm working through nhs choices couch to 5k at the mo, it's designed to get you started easily and safely. Unfortunately at the gym I feel like everyone is watching my pathetic efforts and it's a little embarrassing if I'm honest but I will persevere.

I've been told to invest in two vital pieces of running equipment and one of them is shoes, I'm just running in trainers I picked up at Brantano at the mo but the second item of much needed support up top has been ordered before I give myself a black eye. I will invest in a good pair of running shoes at some point soon, I've been told there is a good place at Stole that will watch you run and help you find the perfect shoes - again I need to be able to run first before I go to them though.

I did the Couch 2 5k and its great, highly recommended. Unfortunately twisted my ankle so had to lay off it but looking forward to getting back on it soon.

Yeah bob running shoes are important, normal don't have the "cushion" so impacts more on your bones/joints and could end up causing injury

two vital pieces what was the other? :p

The place up stoke is called Bourne sports and I think somewhere in Milford has the runner video thing as well

Today is my first 'rest day' but I feel like I'm being lazy, I'm just getting into it then having a day off, it doesn’t make any sense to me but apparently it’s vital to have 1 or 2 days off per week.

Sunday - couch to 5k podcast and Race for life exercises.

Monday - couch to 5k podcast 40 mins cross trainer and 60 lengths of the pool.

Tuesday - Aqua fit class, 10 lengths of the pool, 10 mins treadmill and 15 mins cross trainer & R4L exercises.

Wednesday - 1 hour personal trainer session that nearly killed me, 30 mins in the pool with a four year old.

Today – Nothing

I’m noticing a difference and feeling better already and I can see my fitness improving with every session. At the moment it’s feeling quite addictive and I’m desperate to get out again. I think it’s having affecting my appetite, I’m trying to be good with food as well but after a big bowl of healthy cereal, for breakfast and an early lunch of a huge bowl of undressed salad, tuna and fat free yoghurt dip, I’m still hungry

I understand that there is a 10k in Mkt Drayton on 12th May, and sometime in June the "west bridge 5" takes place in Stone............

10th May is far too soon for me to try and take on a 10k, a 2k maybe but not 10 :(

I'm hurting :(

I had Thursday and Friday off. Mainly because I was feeling a bit stiff in my lower legs but after hitting the gym yesterday then the march I'm quit uncomfortable this morning. I'm not sure if its shin splints or whether its just a protest from muscles that haven't been used for far too long but all online advice I can find suggests not running for up to 2 weeks which isn't brilliant, I feel like I'm giving up before I even get started :(

Hey Bob, I hear it's worth investing in a foam roller. I keep meaning to get one as I get awful tight muscles, but I haven't shelled out yet.

I haven't run since last Sunday, and at the gym I've been sticking to the cross trainer, TRX and the pool.

I'm still feeling a little stiff but it's definitely eased up a bit, yesterday I decided to get on the treadmill, as soon as I started running the pain was unbearable and I had to stop, every time my foot hit the belt it sent a wave of pain right up the inside of my calf.

I’m so cross with myself, although I’m not quite sure what the problem is, I’m trying to get 6 months’ worth of training into 5 months, starting from ridiculously unfit and now I’m into my second week of not running, I don’t think I’ll be funning that half marathon after all.

I've only used it a couple of times, I have no upper body strength and struggle a little to prop myself up just on my arms. Apparently tumble dryer balls work just as wel.

I'm doing more stretching and using the power plate (a machine that vibrates when you stand on it) at the gym, which seems to be helping.
