Good Food And Drink In Stafford

A few posts under my belt
Why is it when you want good food and drink (by good food and drink I mean I don't want microwaved food, but I do want good hand pulled real ales) you have to travel outside of Stafford. It seems like we can have good food but warm flat beer or great beer and rubbish food.
There must be a venue which could or should be able to provide both? Or am I just hoping or just dreaming.

Called in at the Shropshire Haughton for a bar meal. If you are a pile em up and not into taste then its not the place for you but if you want good quality and taste give it a whirl.

Saying that the dessert was certainly filling very rich chocolate thing.

4 of us popped out to the hollybush at salt tonight. 3 of us went for the fish, chips and mushy peas, one went for the venison casserole. All top notch! Odd thing was when one of us ordered apple pie and it had been off for two weeks! Excuse me but a country pub serving fresh produce should be able to cover that, surely!

Although most people on the forum are foodies most people in stafford want to get the most for as cheap as possible. This is why places like 2for1 or 2for10, an all you can eat chinese buffet and cheap carveries are still going whilst places like chambers and weston hall are closed.

This is just a personal view and feel i get from stafford.

I can't help but feel that the important factor is not having to travel all that far to get good food and drinks and offer the possibility that increased flexitime working has resulted in a lot of people not using pubs as eateries at lunch time because they can't get something to eat and back to work in thirty minutes.

I doubt it is feasible to run a kitchen on an evenings only basis which might go some way to explaining why so many people have given up trying or have gone under.

Don't count us in that number Stevie!

Yes, we used to eat in a Sizzling when were first moved here, it was a good 'faceless' introduction to eating out around here. Now however we prefer to dine in places like The Sun (avoiding their burgers and sausages, which tend to be burned), The Bear Grill (best chips anywhere in town), we were about to become Chambers regulars.., Essence Of The Orient (best Chinese we have found) and Spice Island (our fave Indian for both takeaway and eat in).

We USED to like the Pie & Ale, but they seem to have lost some of their edge. We ate in there the other day, most of their ales were unavailable, the pie crust was dried out, the mash tasted like instant and the minted peas had dried out. This could have just been bad timing, but the lack of anything new to their menu isn't helping them with us.

We HATED Golden Orient, the food was just plain revolting! They threaten to charge you extra if you waste, but the fact is a lot of what we tried was to be blunt not fit to feed a dog with, and in most cases was most definitely too cold to serve and probably a health risk. They're down there at the bottom of our list with the Asda Cafe, who serve similarly tasteless and usually cold food.

Oh and for the record, I lived for 9 years before we moved here near to Wolverhampton, the food here is better for the most part. I also lived for 18 months in London, and again the food I can get around here is for the most part better.

The thing here is, one man's meat is another man's poison, as the old proverb goes. I like my steaks RARE (as in very nearly blue), and my steak burgers the same. Hence I wouldn't get a burger in The Sun (the time I tried steak in there, it was plain nasty) as they cremate them, and tend to have the ham, egg and chips in there, whilst I LOVED the steak burger I had in Chambers, and quite like the ones in The Bear who also serve the nicest chips in town (next nicest chips is a chip shop in Kidderminster, the one at rising brook is rubbish and the one in town is downright nasty tasting food). As to carvery, we went to the Radford Bank a few times with my parents. The food was bland at best, and the staff couldn't be more mierable and unfriendly if they tried, so we stopped going there.

Wolfenrook- how I agree with you about the Chinese places. Why everyone raves about the Golden Orient I don't know. It's like a giant canteen with substandard food and no atmosphere at all. The Essence of the Orient, in contrast, is lovely. Warm cosy atmosphere, great food, pleasant staff. In my experience.

I am sad to hear Chambers has shut?- Really liked it in there, but it was always empty and the writing did seem to be on the wall. :( All my favourites seem to close.

The Radford Bank always reminds me of the Living Dead- all the pensioners queuing up to pile their plates up with unfeasibly large amounts of food- have not been impressed for a while there.

Even Malabar, my favourite Indian restaurant, disappointed me on my last visit. The portion sizes seemed to have shrunk and there were no chilli peppers in my Jalfrezi! Now I hear the Pie and Ale house is not as good? I might have to emigrate to Stone. :(

The only way you can expect a good food revival ( if there ever was something to revive ) is ban all the multi nationals from the Borough

Rid MacDonalds, KFC, Americano coffee shops, Benn and Gerry etc etc and then give indivuals a chance to earn some Stafford pounds

The money you spend in these chains leaves town as soon as you hand over your cash

re locate to Stone?

better still - Shropshire
