Does anyone know any good green laning routes in Stafford?

I know they used to have days on the chase but have stopped sue to health and safety (ugh!)

Thankyou!

I've looked there but upon investigation if you go to local maps, and then stafford it just brings up an ordinance survey map?!
Was just wondering if anyone local knew of any good tracks, every site I've been on is really vague....

According to law, you can only go green laning on unused, unmodernized paths/ roads as long as they're not designated for public use, a bridal or cycle way, private land or otherwise restricted.

I wasn't aware that OS maps showed such roads in detail (plus it has to be up to date in case road usage has changed)

I was just wondering if anyone n Stafford went green laning and knew of any good spots?

Its off road riding on motorbikes, except rather than having to pay a small fortune to go to an off road center or course you go on unused roads :)
Different counties have more than others, it depends what the council class them as to whether legally you can ride on it or not.
I think the general idea is you get very muddy and don't care.

Green lanes are open to all road registered motorised vehicles (as they are in fact simply unmade roads with vehicular access) as well as bicycles and ramblers etc.

There seem to be remarkably few around the Stafford area that are suitable for motorised vehicles. There used to be a few good ones across the Chase. The only meaningful one I can find runs from Whitgreave across to the Eccleshall Road in Stone. However, I have heard that that may have been blocked up at the Stone end. There is also one that runs from the the A51 across to Ingestre, though the locals don't like people using it and it is flat and very boring. For anything of any length or challenge then your best bet is the Peak District, where there are loads. Don't know what the situation is in Shropshire though.

As Henryscat suggests, your best source of information is an up-to-date OS map. They have the green lanes marked on them. There are a few websites that will charge you for the information, but they tend to be out of date.

If you're going to use green lanes then please respect all other users, including pedestrians as they have just as much right to be there as you on a bike or me in a 4x4.

I do a lot of greenlaning on a bike. There's very little in this area.

You'll need to get up into the Peaks to find any amount although the ramblers are a pest as they seem to think only they have any rights. Alternatively west Shrops and Wales are very good.

If you're on a bike then you'd be welcome to join us.

Streetmap.co.uk has OS mapping on including 1 to 50k and 25k . The ordnance survey get a map thingy is also good .

As far as National Parks go, I can understand the objections from non-motorised users of rights of way. There have been a lot of issues in the Peaks. The whole point of National Parks is that they are as far as possible unspoilt and tranquil. Admittedly the Peak District is on a flight path to Manchester which doesn't help either.

There have been problems up there but the National Parks were set up for everyone to enjoy...not just ramblers. It must be remenbered that only 5% of all rights of way are open to vehicles. Walkers can use 95% without sharing. These figures are pre NERC bill and are likely to have changed now.

To see the pained, vinegary faces of diehard ramblers as you ride past is a joy to behold :)

Hi Rat Lady.
I've been Green Laning for the last couple of years, on and off. Unfortunatly there is nothing in Stafford or the surrounding area worth bothering with. There seems to be a big secrecy in where these lanes are, especially within the TRF. I don't bother with maps as I have a GPS, most of my riding being in the Peaks and North Wales, well worth the effort of travelling. I haven't been for a while but I'll be going again as soon as my bike is all legal again (February or March).

If you want some company or someone to show you some routes, get in touch. That goes for anyone with a road legal Enduro type bike with penchant for mud, be nice to get out with some locals.
