The Stafford Knot takes centre stage, as the Staffordshire flag flies proudly in Creswell this morning.

Not to dampen the spirit of this victorious day....

But I was always told the Staffordshire knot came about as a thrifty mayor wanted to hang three prisoners with one bit of rope...

I personally think this says a lot about Stafford....

I heard that story too … but I always wondered about the practicality of it. Seems to me an experiment is called for.

    Let's see … I nominate:

    Nigel Farage
    Donald Trump
    Dominic Cummings

However I'm up for other nominations prior to rejecting them. :pint:

They'll do for a start but will @The Hawk's lampost support all three of them at the same time?

When they started hanging the flower baskets on the Market Square lampposts, they hired a sort of mini-digger thing with an attachment to grab the posts and give them a good shaking, to 'ensure' that they would be sufficiently robust to support them..

Someone may still have the contact details for it, so that we don't have any injuries during the executions.

So what you're saying is: (to paraphrase a famous movie line) … "We're gonna need a bigger lampost" … :heyhey:

….. Not sure I want the likes of Nigel Farage hanging from my pylon. Even cold inert steel might have feelings …. :heyhey:

Quite apart from the fact that this is just a story - and i am not one to let facts get in the way of a good one - there are three obvious errors in that sentence -

    1. It's a Stafford knot
    2. It was a Sheriff
    3. It wouldn't work in the way the story would like it to
The origins are 'shrouded in mystery', and regardless of the competing claims for 'truth' remember this; the motto of the Stafford family, of whom it is the heraldic badge, is 'The Knot Unites', but unites is an anagram of unties.

Where should I lodge my complaint?

I was told this age 7 during a school trip to the council buildings (for some reason this fact stuck with me!)
